Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 811.

    When protectors betray

kaavalvaidh thaankadhavil kaavalane kalvaneninkaavaluk killaik kadhavu

If the guard set at the door is himself the thief, then for all his guarding there is no door.

  2. 812.

    Blame among many

aayirang kaalmidhidh thaazhndapoo yaarkaalilsaaynda thenascholla yaar

  3. 813.

    Questions left unasked

aarviduthaa renpaa rarundakayi rendiyeaarpidithaa rennaa thavar

They hold up the snapped rope and ask, ‘Who let it go?’; ‘Who was holding it?’ they never ask.

‘Who let go’ finds the last hand on the rope; ‘who was holding it’ asks whose charge the rope was all along.

    Looking past neglect

  5. 815.

    Where blame should land

oondraadha thoonvizhundaal oorsinakkum thoonnattathondraadha kaiyin pazhi

If a pillar that was not set firmly falls, the town grows angry; the blame belongs to the unseen hand that planted the pillar.

  6. 816.

    Hiding invites scrutiny

thaamuraippaar thanguraiyaidh theduvaar yaarumilarthaammaraippaar theduvaar oor

Those who tell their own fault have no one searching for it; those who hide it have the whole town searching for it.

  7. 817.

    Driving checks away

  8. 818.

    Punishment silences warnings

theekkanda thendraanaidh theeyittaar matrorunaaltheekkandum solvaa rilar

They set fire to the man who cried ‘Fire!’ On another day, even with fire in plain sight, no one says ‘Fire’.

  9. 819.

    Changing the story

suvarin virisal pazhasendraan veezhndamarunaal pudhidhendraan poy

He said the crack in the wall was old. The day after the wall fell, he said it was new. A lie.

  10. 820.

    Credit without the blame

nandruvarin naanenpaan theedhuvarin vandadhenpaanondre udaliru vaai

When good comes, he says ‘I did it’; when bad comes, he says ‘It happened.’ One body, two mouths.
