Chapter 81அதிகாரம் 81 பொறுப்பு Responsibility

Owning what is in one's charge.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 801.

    Leaving it to others

yaaro sumappaa renunjolle aarumsumavaas sumaiyin mudhal

The words “Someone will carry it” are where the burden no one carries begins.

  2. 802.

    Disowning our actions

vervetti melvalarven enpaan vizhundapinyaarvetti naaren pavan

“I will cut the root and grow higher,” he says; and when he has fallen, “Who cut it?”

  3. 803.

    Leaving others the load

irudhoon porukkum edaiyil orudhoonpeyarkkil muzhudhaam sumai

When one of the two pillars holding up a weight is taken away, the pillar left standing carries the whole burden.

  4. 804.

    Overlooking the bearer

kombu muriyum kanidhinpaar kaanpadhuvonambinindra kombin vali

Branches break; do those who eat the fruit ever weigh the strength of the branch they stood on, trusting it?

  5. 805.

    Seeing possible danger

poruppetraan kannukkup putrellaam paambaamverungaal nadappaarkku man

To the eye of one who has taken on a charge, every anthill is a snake; to those who walk barefoot, it is earth.

Cobras may shelter in anthills. Responsibility, not exposure, changes what catches the eye.

  6. 806.

    Becoming what we carry

nilathaip poruthaan nilamaavaan nenjilkulaindaan kulaiyum nilam

Whoever holds up the land becomes the land; when such a one crumbles in heart, the land crumbles.

To bear the land is to hold it up, as ground holds up all that stands on it.

  7. 807.

    Taking on another’s share

thangadan thaanjeyvaar thakkaar pirarkadanaienkadan enpaarkke seer

Those who do their own duty are worthy; honour belongs only to those who say of another’s duty, “It is mine to do.”

The Tamil word for duty also means debt.

  8. 808.

    Blaming the material

konar karuvikon daalsedhukkik kallelaamkonalen repazhip paal

She carves with a crooked tool and insists that every stone is crooked.

  9. 809.

    Bearing our own consequences

thangudai thaame pidippaar pidiyaadhaarthandalai thaamnanaip paar

Their umbrella is theirs to hold; those who do not hold it soak their own heads.

  10. 810.

    Changing our own steps

theeraadha setril adiyillai serandrumaaraadha nannadaiye seru

In endless mud there is no footing. Yet it is not the mud: our own unchanging step is the mud.
