Chapter 35அதிகாரம் 35 மாற்றம் Change
That all things shift.
341. Change noticed late
kazhandrapin modhirame kaattum viralinmelivadhanaik kaanaar melindu
Only the ring, once it has slipped off, shows that the finger has grown thin; those who have grown thin do not see it.
342. Familiarity misses change
melver nakarthedutha karpadiyai naadorumselvar midhithari yaar
A soft root has lifted the stone step out of place; those who pass tread on it every day and do not know.
343. Refusing to change
maaraadhu nirpaan malaiyenpaan kaalamaamaarodu povaan azhindu
He who stands unchanging, the so-called mountain, goes down the river that is time, undone.
344. Misreading the past
netrin padiye yinivarum naalendraarnetrai yariyaa thavar
Those who have said the day to come will be exactly like yesterday do not know yesterday.
‘Know’ (ari) here means understanding, not memory: they lived through yesterday without understanding it.
345. Small shifts accumulate
naalondruk kondru nakarthiya velikkaalkolindridh thotraan nilam
One fence-post moved each day, and he lost land with no one ever seizing it.
The Tamil word for ‘seizing’ (kol) also means grasping with the mind: he may also have lost land without ever grasping it.
346. Still the same
tholurikkum paambu pudhutholaip petridumnaalum pazhambaambe naam
The snake that sheds its skin gets a new one; every day, we are the same old snake.
‘The old snake’ is the snake itself, not the skin it sheds.
347. Outgrowing what sheltered us
siraku mulaikkum kuruvikkuk koottinsirumai yerikkum parappu
To a bird whose wings are coming in, the smallness of the nest burns into flight.
348. Hard to undo
paalai uraithal elidhe uraidhayirpaalaai urukkal aridhu
Milk is easy to set into curd; curd once set is hard to turn back into milk.
349. Change happens suddenly
panischumai thaangum kilaiyil kuruviamarndadhum sindum pani
The moment a sparrow settles on a branch laden with dew, the dew spills.
350. Searching for the past
karaimaatrip paayndadhanaal aatrinidai netraikkaraidhedi veenalaiyum neer
Having changed its bank and flowed on, the water wanders mid-river, seeking yesterday’s bank in vain.
