Since you go on not knowing the day you will die, know the day you are living.

  2. 352.

    What we hold onto

irakkumen renninaan eevaan iravaathenavenni naanpoottum poottu

The one who thinks, ‘It will die,’ gives. The one who thinks, ‘It will not die,’ locks the lock.

  3. 353.

Those who forget death have forgotten themselves; those who know themselves are those who do not forget death.

  4. 354.

    Speaking of our death

ellaarkkum vaaythirandu saavuraippaan thansaavaissolladh thiravaa idhazh

He opens his mouth to tell everyone of death; his lips do not open to tell of his own.

  5. 355.

    Rank ends here

mudisoodi mannaanda mannavan yaakkaipodisoodum vensaambal poo

The body of the king who wore a crown and ruled the earth wears dust, a flower of white ash.

  6. 356.

    Enemies share an end

vekundaa nenavekunden veezhndaan vizhundenpukundom oruman puzhu

He raged, and I raged; he fell, and I fell; we entered one earth, both of us worms.

  7. 357.

    What walls can’t keep in

kaatradakkum sutrellaam kattuvaan thanmooschukkaatradakka maattaak kadhai

This is the tale of one who walls out the wind on every side and cannot keep in the wind of his own breath.

The breath he cannot keep in is the breath that leaves the body at death.

  8. 358.

    No promised return

aandudhorum vaankuruku vandumeelum naalilorumeenduvaraa naalum varum

Year after year the heron of the sky comes and goes back again; among its days of coming comes a day of no return.

  9. 359.

    Counting on more days

naalillai yendravankan naalellaam nandraakumnaalunden raarkkillai naal

Whoever says no days are left finds every day good; those who say there are days yet are left with none.

  10. 360.

    What death puts in proportion

saavai marappaan siruporudke seeruvaansaavai arivaan nakum

He who forgets death flares up at trifles; he who knows death laughs.
