Chapter 34அதிகாரம் 34 நன்றி Gratitude

Recognising what one has received.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 331.

    Remembering without words

oosikodudh thonaidh thunimarakkum noolariyumpesaadhu thaiyalin kan

The cloth forgets the one who gave the needle; the thread, without a word, remembers him in the stitching.

The needle’s giver stands for anyone who helps; cloth and thread both gain from his gift. Remembering him needs no word of thanks.

  2. 332.

    Passing help on

thandadhanaidh thandaarkkudh thaaraar aduthavarkkevanduserum vaazhkkaik kadan

What was received is not given back to those who gave it; it is to the one who comes next that life’s debt is paid.

In the Tamil both verbs describe how things go; neither commands. Nothing forbids repaying the giver.

  3. 333.

    Small gifts remembered

perumazhai naadu marakkum sirumazhaipeythavidam pookkum nilam

A whole country forgets a great rain; the ground where a small rain fell blooms.

  4. 334.

    Disowning earlier help

oondruko lindri nadappen enumserukkuoondruko loondriya pin

The pride that says, ‘I will walk without a stick,’ comes after leaning on the stick.

  5. 335.

    One hurt eclipses help

thensertha theneeyin kottondre kanmunnethaansertha thenmarakkum naa

The bee that gathered the honey stings once; with that one sting in sight, the tongue forgets the honey.

The same bee made the honey and gave the sting. In Tamil, ‘tongue’ also means speech: what one says of someone.

  6. 336.

    Scorning what helped

erinindru eniyaidh thootruvaan eniyindrelthootrum uyaram edhu

He stands on the ladder he climbed and scorns it; without the ladder, from what height would he scorn?

  7. 337.

    Seeing what we have

nandriyul laarkkudh tharaivalamaam illaarkkunindravidam paalai nilam

For the grateful, the earth is rich; for the ungrateful, the ground they stand on is desert.

  8. 338.

    Bound by receiving

kodaiyennum thoondil koduthavan kaiyilvidaiyillaa meenaam perin

Giving is a hook; whoever receives is a fish held in the giver’s hand, with no getting free.

The verse gives the giver no motive and no bait: the hook is not a trick hidden inside the gift but the giving itself.

  9. 339.

    Who should remember

koduthaar marakkum kuraiyandru kondaarmarakkum kuraiye kurai

When the giver forgets, there is no fault; when the receiver forgets, there the fault lies.

  10. 340.

    Seeing the giver’s cost

mudkeerik konduvandaan senneeraik kandavarkkukkolkani yalla kodai

Thorns tore him as he brought it; to those who saw his blood, it is no fruit for the taking, but a gift.
