Recovery after injury.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 311.

    The capacity to heal

kaaynda nilambilavu kaattum nanaindapinvaaymoodik kollum valam

Parched ground shows its cracks; once soaked, it closes its mouths: that is its richness.

  2. 312.

    What illness leaves

kadalunda kappalmel uppuppoodh thaarpoludalunda noyin suvadu

As salt blooms on a ship the sea has eaten, so a disease leaves its trace on a body it has eaten.

  3. 313.

    Strength in repair

udainda kilaiyin idathil valarndathadippe marathin thiram

Where the branch broke, the tree grew thick; that thickening is the tree’s own strength.

  4. 314.

    Pain after mending

murivai marakkum elumbu murivaimarakkaadhu moottin vali

The bone forgets the fracture; the pain in the joint does not forget the fracture.

  5. 315.

    Still vulnerable there

valaivizhunda kambiyai nerseytha pinnumvalainda idathil valai

Even after the bent wire is straightened, there, where it bent: a bend.

  6. 316.

    Checking is the unhealing

aaritro endre adikkadip paarppadheaaraamai yennum azhal

To keep looking (has it cooled yet?) is itself the fire that does not cool.

In Tamil one verb means both ‘heal’ and ‘cool down’; the question and the fire share that root.

  7. 317.

    Progress out of sight

verin valarschi vizhikkudh therivadhillaiveraal valarum maram

The eye does not see the root grow; the tree grows by the root.

  8. 318.

    Renewal without knowing

theeppatta kaattil thirumbavum pookkumnaaltheeppatta thendrariyaa man

On the day the burnt forest blooms again, its soil does not know it was burnt.

  9. 319.

    Growth where hurt was

vettudh thazhumbe marathin pudhukkilaietti mulaikkum idam

The scar where a tree was cut is the very place its new branch shoots from.

  10. 320.

    Life returns within

oyndapin ootredukkum neerpol udalullumtheyndapin thondrum uyir

When the flow is spent, water wells up from its spring; in the worn-down body, too, life surfaces from within.

The Tamil word for ‘life’ also means the soul.
