Chapter 31அதிகாரம் 31 அமைதி Stillness

Inner quiet.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 301.

    Keeping ourselves unsettled

thelivilai yendraal kalakkinaal kaineengasseradangadh therum kayam

‘It is not clear,’ she said, and stirred it. Her hand withdrawn, the mud settles; the pond clears.

  2. 302.

    Claiming to be calm

amarnde nenavamaraa nenjam vilakkaiavikka visirum puyal

‘I am settled,’ yet the heart does not settle: that heart is a storm, fanning to put out the lamp.

The words do not settle the unrest within; that unrest is itself the wind at the flame.

  3. 303.

    Knowing without words

sollaa thirukkum maramariyum manninkeezhsollaa thirukkum punal

The tree that keeps silent knows the water that keeps silent beneath the earth.

  4. 304.

    Calm needs security

naalaip pasikoor vayitrinaidh thetrudhalvaalaiyai mettil vidal

To console a belly whose hunger will sharpen tomorrow is to set a vaalai fish down on high ground.

The vaalai is a river fish; on dry raised ground it gasps, however gently it is set down.

  5. 305.

    Old trouble surfaces

thelindapin kaanum kalakkam nedunaalolindirunda setrin mukam

Once it has cleared, the murk that appears is long-hidden mud showing its face.

  6. 306.

    Trying too hard

amaidhi varumen radikkum murasoadikkaamal oyva tholi

Will the drum that is beaten to cry ‘Peace will come’ bring quiet? Sound comes to rest when the drum is not beaten.

  7. 307.

    Quiet beneath thought

oyaadhu sutrum thikiriyin aaniyaikkaanaadhu pokum vizhi

The wheel turns without rest; the eye passes over the pin it turns on.

The axle-pin is the one part of a wheel that does not move; all the turning rests on it.

  8. 308.

    Quiet helps us notice

manandanindaar kannukkup pullum peridhaammanangodhithaar kaanaar malai

To the cooled mind even grass is great; the boiling mind does not see a mountain.

  9. 309.

    What quiet reveals

osai yadangiya naanmattum yaazhnarambupesum thanadhunmaip per

The lute-string speaks its own true name only on the day the sound has died down.

While music plays, the string is lost in the sound it makes; once that sound subsides, the string itself can be heard for what it is.

  10. 310.

    Quiet learned through unrest

kalangidh thelinda kayamariyum aazhamkalangaadha neerin urai

A pool that was stirred and clouded, then settled clear again, knows the depth; to water never stirred, the depth is mere talk.
