Chapter 104அதிகாரம் 104 கொண்டாட்டம் Celebration

Marking good things together.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1031.

    What stays with us

aattukkal manjal azhikka azhiyaadhukoottamazhin thaalum niram

On the grinding stone turmeric is destroyed, yet not destroyed: though its mass breaks apart, its colour does not.

Koottam, ‘mass’, also means a gathering of people.

  2. 1032.

    Tears that are shared

kanneer thanithozhukum kondaattak kanneeromannor pakirndaal mazhai

Tears fall alone; tears of celebration, if the people of the earth share them, are rain.

  3. 1033.

    Who gets left out

oondriyakai mannul urangum uyarmaramthondriyanaal kondaadum oor

The hand that planted the tall tree sleeps in the earth beneath it, and the town celebrates the day the tree came up.

  4. 1034.

    Giving beyond measure

marakkaa lalandu vazhanguvar nannaalmarakkaal vazhivadhe maan

On the good day they measure out their gifts; the glory is in the measure brimming over.

  5. 1035.

    One person missing

aayiram pervandaal enna voruvariraamai yariyum vizhaa

A thousand may come; what of it? A festival knows when one person is missing.

  6. 1036.

    Abundance starts celebration

vidhaikkoru nelmani podhum vilaivinmikaiye vizhaavin vidhai

One grain of paddy is enough for seed; the seed of a festival is the overflow of the harvest.

  7. 1037.

    Strangers standing together

vizhaavin azhakul azhaku vizhaavulpazhakaadhaar koodinir ral

Of all a festival’s beauties, the most beautiful is strangers standing together in it.

  8. 1038.

    Celebrating through hardship

karaiyidinda oorum vizhaakkollum kanneeruraiyidaiye oorum nakai

Even a town whose embankment has given way holds its festival; in the middle of tearful talk, laughter wells up.

  9. 1039.

    Drawn into celebration

aadaluk killai azhaippenpa kandaaraiaadale koottum anaithu

A dance needs no invitation, they say; the dance gathers those who have seen it into its embrace.

  10. 1040.

    Sharing another’s joy

vizhaavir sirippaar palare pirarthamvizhaavir sirippaar silar

At a festival, many laugh; at the festival of others, few laugh.

In the first half the festival is simply where one is; the second half asks whose festival it is.
