Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1021.

    How we say it

nakaiyindris sonnaal nalamum pakaiyaamnakaiyir pakaiyum nalam

Said without a smile, even good is enmity; said with a smile, even enmity is good.

  2. 1022.

    Our own tangles

mudischavizhkkum sollondru kettaar mudischendrukattiyadhe thaame nakai

Those who hear a word that unties knots find they tied the knot themselves: the joke is theirs.

What seemed so binding becomes something to laugh at.

  3. 1023.

    Laughing at ourselves

veezhnden enanakuvaan veezhschiyul veezhschiyillaivaazhnden enanakuvaan kedu

For the man who laughs at himself, saying ‘I fell,’ there is no fall within his fall; for the man who laughs in triumph, saying ‘I have prospered,’ there is ruin.

He falls, but nothing within him falls with it. The second man’s laugh is self-satisfied; in Tamil, ‘laugh’ also means ‘mock’.

  4. 1024.

    Laughter hides blame

pukaiyezhundu moodiyapin theeyidam kaanaarnakaiyezhundu moodum pazhi

Once smoke has risen over it, no one can find where the fire is; laughter, rising, covers a fault.

  5. 1025.

    The healer’s wound

nakaiyir pirarnoy thanippaar thamakkornakaiyir ranivilaa noy

Those who ease the pain of others with laughter have a pain of their own that laughter does not ease.

  6. 1026.

    What anger undoes

nakaiyaal thiranda kadhavais sinamennumthaazhaal adaikkum thakai

The door that laughter opened, anger’s bolt shuts: such is the way of things.

  7. 1027.

    Calling it over

adangiya thennum ayalaar nakaiyeadangaa thadharku viraku

Onlookers laugh and say it has died down; their laughter is firewood for what has not died down.

  8. 1028.

    Mockery exposes us

viralkaattis sindum nakaiyellaam moondruviralthammaik kaattum vinai

Every laugh flung out with a pointing finger turns three fingers back on the one who laughs.

  9. 1029.

    Laughing to hide pain

moodum nakaiyaal mikumbun mikumbunnaalmoodum nakaiyum mikum

Laughter that covers a wound makes the wound grow; the wound that grows makes the laughter that covers it grow.

  10. 1030.

    Finding laughter in hardship

kadaiyak kadaiyanei melvarum thunpamkadaiyak kadaiya nakai

Churn and churn, and ghee rises to the top; churn and churn suffering, and laughter.
