Chapter 53அதிகாரம் 53 ஆக்கம் Making

Bringing a thing into being.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 521.

    The maker is made

vanaindaal vanaindaal suzhalmel kalimanvanaindadhu kaiyai vadivu

She shaped and shaped the clay on the wheel, and the form she was making shaped her hand.

  2. 522.

    Wanting to make again

mannaip pisaindaviral maalikaiyaik kattiyapinmannaidh thodathudikkum noy

Once the finger that kneaded clay has built the mansion, it falls ill with longing to touch clay again.

  3. 523.

    Stepping back reveals flaws

vanaindaal nimirndu vanaindadhaik kandaalvanaindadhir kanne vadu

She shaped it, straightened up, and looked at what she had made; in the very thing she made, a flaw.

  4. 524.

    Material shapes the outcome

vadikkum uliyin valippandru vendumvadivam marathin maruppu

The shape that is wanted is not the chisel’s force; it is the wood’s refusal.

  5. 525.

    Possibility becomes form

kollan ulaiyinil kodi vadivirukkumvallaa nadithavudan ondru

In the smith’s forge lie ten million forms; the moment the able hand strikes, one.

  6. 526.

    Potential needs shaping

vettunda kallirkuk koyilum vettaamalaikku malaiyendra per

For the cut stone, even a temple; for the uncut mountain, the name ‘mountain’.

At the heart of a Tamil temple stands a sacred image of carved stone, and the temple around it is built of cut stone too.

  7. 527.

    Our mark remains

kalathai vanaindaal viralin valaivekalathin vilimbaai valaindu

She shaped a vessel, and the very curve of her finger curves on as the vessel’s rim.

  8. 528.

    Beyond our hands

aakkinaal soolaik kalathai yavalaakkamaakkiyadhu soolai neruppu

She made the vessel for the kiln; the kiln’s fire made her making.

  9. 529.

    Making involves removal

sirpi sedhukkum karungal silaiyaakumsirpi kalaindadhu thool

The black stone a sculptor chisels becomes a statue; what the sculptor took off it is dust.

  10. 530.

    Our hands remember

kuzhaitha manalin vadivam azhindumviralninaikkum eeram adhu

The kneaded sand has lost its shape, yet the finger remembers its wetness.
