Chapter 54அதிகாரம் 54 சிறப்பு Excellence
Doing a thing as well as it can be done.
531. What true quality exposes
orunarambu sevvai yunarndaal porundaanarambelaam naanum thanakku
Once one string is known to ring true, all the strings that do not fit feel shame.
532. One part neglected
thonnooru kanni pinaithum viduthadhorukanniye veezhthum valai
Though ninety meshes are tied, it is the one left loose, that one alone, that brings the net down.
533. Care beyond sight
mannul pudhaiyum adikkal aranmanaikannul theriyaa nilai
The foundation stone is buried in the earth, not in sight; the eye that looks at the palace does not see what the palace stands on.
534. Flaws in fine work
panniya yaazhnarambu paazhpattaal pannaadhayaazhinum nokum isai
When a string on a tuned lute is ruined, its music aches more than the music of a lute that was never tuned.
535. Gain wears another down
arivaal thanakkudh thanaitheettum podhumtheriyaadhu thaantheyum kal
As the sickle sharpens its own edge upon the stone, the stone wears itself away unseen.
A sickle is sharpened by grinding it against a whetstone.
536. Looks are not enough
koottiya manpaanai kolam nirambinumottai yariyum punal
A joined clay pot may brim with beauty; the water knows the hole.
537. Calling it finished
uruvaakaak kallai uruvendraan sirpiorunaalum mutrup peraadhu
The sculptor called the unshaped stone a figure; it will never be finished.
Calling unfinished work done closes off the work it still needs.
538. Care is not vanity
kutramaras seyyum peruviruppo tharperumaiandru kalaiyin aram
Is it vanity, this great longing to leave no fault in the work? No: it is the art’s own conscience.
539. Praise goes to one
vannam kalappaan pukazhkolvaan vannathinkanneer kalandaar palar
One man mixes the colour and wins the praise; many have mixed their tears into the colour.
540. The work itself rewards
kaikkooli neengum idathum niraiseyvaanmeykkooli thannul vinai
Even when the wage in the hand is gone, whoever works to the full has his true wage within: the work.
