Chapter 51அதிகாரம் 51 பழக்கம் Habit
Patterns that become second nature.
501. Old patterns remain
kudathul valarnda kodiyin thisaiyekudamaam thirandaalum koon
A creeper grown inside a pot follows the pot’s shape; even with the pot opened, it bends.
502. Repetition makes a pattern

orukaal vazhindaal vaduvenpa meendumvazhindaal vazhiyenpar neer
If water spills over once, they call it a scar; if it spills over again, they call it a path.
503. Old burdens shape us

vandi pirithapin maattin nadaiyilekondadhu thondrum nukam
When the cart is unhitched, the yoke the ox bore shows in its walk.
504. Without being told
sekkizhutha kaalai suvadariyum paakanindrippukkavazhi maaraa nadai
The ox that worked the oil-press knows the rut; with no driver, its walk keeps to the round it first took.
An oil-press ox walks in endless circles round the press, yoked to its beam.
505. The reason is gone

506. Becoming what we allow

sirupori veezhndanaal kandaan avikkaanperundeeye aanaan avan
The man who saw a small spark on the day it fell and did not put it out became the great fire.
507. Help becomes dependence
oondrukol oondri nadandavan naaladaiyakkaalmarandaan kole thunai
A man walked leaning on a stick; as the days went by he forgot his own legs, and now the stick alone is his support.
508. Early patterns last
mudhalvalaivu katramaram mutrilum veezhndummudhalvalaive kaattum viraku
Even when the tree that learned its first bend has fallen completely, its firewood shows the first bend.
509. Just this once
orumurai yendraar palamurai seythaarorumurai yendre ninaithu
‘Just once,’ they said, and did it many times, thinking each time: just once.
510. Acting without thinking
pidithaan kadivaalam naaladaivir kaiyepidikkum kadivaalam thaan
He held the reins; as the days passed, his hand came to hold them on its own.
