Chapter 4அதிகாரம் 4 வியப்பு Wonder
What awe does to the self.
31. Room for wonder
kandenen raankan dadhuve karaiyaakumkandilen endraan kadal
Whoever says ‘I have seen’ has seen only the shore; for whoever says ‘I have not seen’, there is the sea.
32. Wonder depends on beholding
kalsedhukkik kumbittaan kanniraindaan kottiyavankallendraan kalle karu
One man carved a stone and worshipped it, and his eyes filled; another knocked on it and called it stone; stone from the very first.
In Tamil temples a carved, consecrated stone image is worshipped. The closing words may be the knocker’s, or the poet’s.
33. Wonder close at hand
vinnirukka vendaa vizhimunnar orerumbinkannirukkum ellaa viyappu
There is no need for the sky: all wonder lies before the eye, in the eye of one ant.
34. Inspection can miss wonder
koodu pirithaar kuruviyinaik kaanavendrepaadum kuralai marandu
Just to see the sparrow they pulled the nest apart, its singing voice forgotten.
Tucked inside, the sparrow is heard but not seen; they want the bird itself before their eyes.
35. Seeing the world anew
mederidh tholoyndu nindravan kankalilnaadellaam putham pudhidhu
He climbed the rise, his shoulders eased, and he stood there; to his eyes the whole land was brand new.
36. Routine without sameness
naadorunj seyva thoruvazhiye yaayinumnaadoru mondrandru naal
Day after day the same things are done the same way; day after day, the day is not the same.
37. Time away renews wonder
valaikkup pazhakiya thoni karaiyilaandumeendaal kadale pudhidhu
Back after a year ashore, a boat that knew the net finds the sea itself new.
38. What knowing can cost
vilakketrip paarthaan vizhiyaarndaan munnaiiruttin inimai izhandu
He lit a lamp and looked, and his eyes had their fill; he had lost the sweetness of the dark that came before.
39. Wonder we miss
thaamaraip pooppadhaik kaanaan kadandaanavanuk kadhumalaraa mottu
The lotus bloomed, and he walked past without seeing it; for him it was an unopened bud.
40. Knowledge leaves wonder alive
verarindaal mannarindaal vinnarindaal thannarivinverariyaal nindraal viyandu
She knew root, soil and sky; the root of her own knowing she did not know; she stood in wonder.
