Chapter 19அதிகாரம் 19 மனசாட்சி Conscience

The inner judge of one's own acts.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 181.

    Our own witness

kallan nadandaan oliyillaa nindrukettaanulle olikkum adi

The thief walked without a sound, then stopped to listen; inside, a footstep fell.

  2. 182.

    Failing our own judgment

oormunnarth thotraal udaiyizhappaan thanmunnarththotraano tholizhap paan

Defeated before the town, a man loses his garment; defeated before himself, will he not lose his skin?

  3. 183.

    Guilt outlasts the act

orumurai veesinaan vaalai irukaiyumthaangumor vaazhnaal muzhudhu

He swung the sword once; both his hands bear it his whole life.

  4. 184.

    Comfort cannot quiet conscience

panjanai melurakkam kollum orumanalnenjamellaam thattum vizhippu

A single grain of sand lies sleeping on a cotton bed, and it knocks the whole heart awake.

The tiny grain rests at ease on the soft bed, while the heart it touches gets no sleep.

  5. 185.

    Worth without a certificate

saandror enappaduvaar saandridhazh vendaadhaarsaandraavar thannenjin mun

Those called the worthy need no certificate; before their own heart, they are their own testimony.

  6. 186.

    Lies unsettle us first

poythodu munnarp puzhungum nudhalvervaimeythoda laalum aridhu

Before a lie is even on the lips, hot sweat breaks on the brow; truth on the lips seldom brings that sweat.

  7. 187.

    Leaving ourselves unexamined

oornaduve nindraan pirarkku vazhakkuraikkaoorkadando dumthan vazhakku

He takes his stand in the town square to plead the cases of others; his own case runs off out of town.

  8. 188.

    Familiar wrongs sting less

pazhakka maraikkum perumbun pudhidhaayssurukken rezhumsiru keeru

Habit hides the great wound; a small fresh scratch flares up and stings.

  9. 189.

    Praise leaves faults intact

ponnen reduthaar purathaar eduthavanthannul arivaan kalimbu

Others hold it up as gold; the one who holds it knows, within himself, the tarnish.

  10. 190.

    Fearing the wrong mockery

oorsirithaa lanjuvaar oorthuyindraal nenjulleyaarsirikkum endrariyaar thaam

They fear the laughter of the town; when the town sleeps, they do not know who laughs within their heart.

The town’s laughter stops when the town sleeps; the laughter in the heart needs no waking crowd.
