Chapter 20அதிகாரம் 20 உண்மை Truth
What is so, said and lived.
191. What lying demands
meyyuraithaal vaaymattum podhumboy solludharkumeymuzhudhum vendum vilai
To tell the truth, the mouth is enough; to tell a lie, the whole body is the price.
192. Defined by concealment
moodaadha punmel mukamoodi yittavanmoodaadha punne mukam
He laid a mask over a wound that would not close; that unclosed wound alone is his face.
Tamil moodaadha means ‘unclosed’ and ‘uncovered’: a wound that will not close stays bare under any mask. A face is what others know us by.
193. Answering to a lie
poyyondru sonnaal pukundadhellaam appoyyinkaiyoppam vendum kanakku
She told one lie, and the account of all that followed needs that lie’s signature.
194. Trapped by protection
poykkottai kattinaar meykaakka naaladaivilpoykkottaik kaaval sirai
They built a fortress of lies to guard the truth; in time, guarding the fortress of lies became their prison.
Tamil mei means both ‘truth’ and ‘body’: the fortress may guard the truth, or the builders’ own persons.
195. Concealment under strain
thaiyal maraitha kizhisal izhupattaalpaiyadh theriyum pazhi
When stitching has hidden a tear and the cloth is pulled, disgrace slowly shows through.
196. Intentions slip out
maarikku munne manakkum puzhudhipolsorum maraitha kurippu
As dust breathes out its scent before the rain, a hidden intent slips out.
Tamil kurippu means both ‘intent’ and ‘sign’: what slips out may be the purpose itself or its telltale signal.
197. Lies need support
meykkudh thunaivendaa meyyedhan thoonaakumpoykkudh thunaivendum poy
Truth needs no prop; truth is its own pillar. A lie needs a prop; its prop is a lie.
198. The cost of silence
vizhunginaan sollai vizhungiya sollevizhungum avandran uyir
He swallowed a word; the word he swallowed swallows his own life.
199. Harm without exposure
ootrukkul uppupol poyyondru kannukkudhthotraa thazhikkum suvai
Like salt within a spring, a single lie, unseen by the eye, destroys the taste.
200. Recognition comes later
pulithapin thithikkum nellikkaai poladhthelindapin meythavan per
Like the gooseberry that turns sweet after its sourness, the name of one who proved true grows sweet when the truth comes clear.
The Indian gooseberry (nellikkai) tastes sharply sour, then leaves a lingering sweetness in the mouth.
