Giving freely.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 981.

    Giving without humiliation

kolvaan nimirndu kolinkodai aamkunindukollin kodumai yadhu

What is received standing upright is a gift; what is received bowed down is cruelty.

  2. 982.

    Wealth that remains

viduthapin nirkum valamenpa paalaikkoduthapin nirkum mulai

Plenty, they say, is what remains when it has been let go; the breast remains when it has given its milk.

Giving the milk does not use up the breast that gives it.

  3. 983.

    Giving starts small

siridhalithup paarthaan peridhalippaan selvamvarinkoduppen enpaan kodaan

Whoever has tried giving a little will give much; whoever says, ‘If wealth comes, I will give,’ does not give.

  4. 984.

    What giving makes possible

karappavar kaipporul kaayndanel andreviraippavar kaipporul vithu

In the hands of those who hide it, wealth is dried grain; in the hands of those who sow, it is seed.

Seed is grain scattered on the ground; it is the same wealth in hand, held back or let go.

  5. 985.

    Giving beyond loss

eethaan azhindaan enavennel neyyazhindutheethan thadhuve sudar

Do not think the one who gave is spent. Ghee is spent, and its spending gives the flame.

  6. 986.

    Care in giving

vaalmunai thankaiyir kondu pidineettumullam arinda kodai

To grip the sword by its point and hold out the hilt: that is the giving that knows the heart.

  7. 987.

    Giving what helps

kaalalandu thanda seruppu nadaidharumkaalariyaap ponnum sumai

A sandal measured to the foot gives a stride; even gold that does not know the foot is a burden.

  8. 988.

    Giving with little

kalathir kadaisinel eevaal karunaikalanjiyam eevork karidhu

The woman who gives the last grain in her pot has a compassion that those who give granaries rarely reach.

  9. 989.

    Shared or hoarded joy

eeyum makizhschi irukaraiyum paayumneereeyaa makizhschi sunai

The joy that gives is water flowing out to both banks; the joy that does not give is water gathered at its spring.

  10. 990.

    When giving is hard

eedhar kariyadhai eendaan periyavaneedhar keliyadhai yaar

The one who gave what was hard to give is the great one; and what is easy to give, who would not give?
