A good name.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 971.

    Character makes itself known

    இருளிடை மல்லிகை நாறுதல் போலஇருப்பிடம் தேடா இயல்பு

irulidai mallikai naarudhal polairuppidam thedaa iyalpu

Jasmine giving off its fragrance in the dark: such is a nature that seeks no place for itself.

  2. 972.

    Honour comes from others

    சூட்டுவார் சூட்டச் சுடரும் புகழ்மாலைசூடிக்கொள் வார்க்கில்லை சூட்டு

soottuvaar soottas sudarum pukazhmaalaisoodikkol vaarkkillai soottu

Fame’s garland shines when others give it; those who garland themselves are never garlanded.

In Tamil custom, placing a garland around someone’s neck is a public mark of honour.

  3. 973.

    The deed ends, blame doesn’t

    தீத்தொழில் தீர்ந்தபின் தீர்ந்ததோ பேர்தீயின்தீக்கனல் நீளும் புகை

theethozhil theerndapin theerndadho pertheeyintheekkanal neelum pukai

When the wrong is over, is the ill name over too? From the fire’s ember the smoke stretches on.

  4. 974.

    One fault draws attention

    வெண்சுவர் மேற்பட்ட கீற்றொன்றே யாயினும்கண்சென்று நிற்கும் கறை

vensuvar merpatta keetrondre yaayinumkansendru nirkum karai

Even one streak on a white wall is a stain: the eye goes to it and stays there.

  5. 975.

    What killing stains

    கைகழுவ நீர்தேடும் கொன்றவன் மானமெனும்மெய்கழுவ நீரும் இலை

kaikazhuva neerthedum kondravan maanamenummeykazhuva neerum ilai

The killer seeks water to wash his hands; for the body that is his honour, there is not even water.

Killing stains more than his hands: honour is pictured as a body of its own. The Tamil word for ‘body’ also means ‘truth’.

  6. 976.

    Who takes the blame

    நூல்நூறு கோர்த்த மணியின் ஒருமணிகீழ்விழ நூலே பழி

noolnooru kortha maniyin orumanikeezhvizha noole pazhi

A thread holds a hundred beads; when one bead falls, the blame is the thread’s alone.

  7. 977.

    A shared fall

    தலைமை மதிப்பழிந்தால் சார்ந்தோர் மதிப்பெல்லாம்கோலோடு சாயும் குடை

thalaimai madhippazhindaal saarndor madhippellaamkolodu saayum kudai

When leadership’s honour is lost, the honour of all who rely on it goes down, as a canopy goes down with its pole.

  8. 978.

    Known before being seen

    காற்றிற் கலந்தமணம் போலப் புகழ்க்கணியோள்தோற்றத்தின் முன்செல்லும் பேர்

kaatrir kalandamanam polap pukazhkkaniyolthotrathin munsellum per

Like fragrance carried on the wind, the name of a woman who graces fame arrives before she is seen.

  9. 979.

    What sustains a name

    பொருள்போனால் பேர்போகா தென்பர் பொருளின்பொருள்போனால் பேரும் கெடும்

porulponaal perpokaa thenpar porulinporulponaal perum kedum

People say that when wealth goes, the name remains; when the meaning of wealth goes, the name goes too.

In Tamil, porul means both wealth and meaning.

  10. 980.

    Conduct holds reputation together

    கடையாணி நீங்கின் சகடம் சிதறும்நடையாணி நீங்கின் நிலை

kadaiyaani neengin sakadam sidharumnadaiyaani neengin nilai

When the linchpin comes out, the cart falls apart; so does one’s standing, when the pin of conduct comes out.

A linchpin is the small pin that keeps a cart’s wheel on its axle. The Tamil word for ‘conduct’ also means one’s gait.
