Chapter 95அதிகாரம் 95 சமாதானம் Peace

More than the absence of strife.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 941.

    Peace in everyday life

siruvan kadaikkus sirithunadap paanelarimin padaidheer nilam

When a boy goes laughing to the shop, know that this is a land where armies have come to an end.

  2. 942.

    What calm can hide

thuzhaavungai nirkadh thelindadhuneer enparazhundumser rode aram

When the stirring hand stops, people say the water has cleared; virtue goes down with the settling mud.

Stirring keeps everything in the water moving and in view. When it stops, the good sinks out of sight along with the dirt.

  3. 943.

    Taking peace for granted

pakaivar varavilai yendramai vaarkkuppakaiyaa vadhudham amaivu

Those who say ‘No enemy is coming’ and settle back have their own settling for an enemy.

  4. 944.

    Endurance mistaken for peace

sumaiyaidh thodarnda mudhukin nelivaiamaidhi enakkonda kan

The bend of a back that kept on under its burden: an eye took this for peace.

The strain belongs to the one carrying the load; the peace belongs to the one looking.

  5. 945.

    Silence imposed by power

odukkum arasin oliyatra naaduthuyilandru setha nilam

The country silenced by the state that crushes it is not asleep; it is dead ground.

  6. 946.

    Peace measured by tomorrow

naalai yenalkoodaa naattil amaidhiyillainaalai yenalvendum naadu

A land where people cannot say ‘tomorrow’ has no peace; a land must be one where they can say ‘tomorrow’.

  7. 947.

    Without fearing each other

orumarathin neezhal udanamarndaar thammulveruvalilaa naale samam

When those who share one tree’s shade spend a day without fear of one another, that day alone is peace.

  8. 948.

    Rebuilding takes people

azhithadhan merkattu vaarillai yaayinazhithadhuve nirkum azhivu

If no one builds on what was destroyed, what was destroyed itself stands, as destruction.

  9. 949.

    Who sustained the peace

pornin radhenpaar nilame polivadharkuaarnin ranaren rari

You who say the war has stopped, know who stood firm so that the land might flourish.

  10. 950.

    Unresolved causes remain

murantheernda thendraar mudhaltheernda thillaimaramveezhndaal vervaazhum man

They said the strife was over; its root is not. When a tree falls, its root lives on in the soil.
