Chapter 94அதிகாரம் 94 மீளிணக்கம் Reconciliation

Restoring a broken relationship.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 931.

    The way back

viraindu kadanda vazhiye sinathinthirumba nadakkum tholaivu

Coming back from anger, one walks the very road one rushed across.

Coming back from a quarrel means retracing, step by step, the ground covered in the rush of leaving.

  2. 932.

    Both must stay

kaikothu nirkum karungal valaivuorukal vilakin vizhum

Stone holding stone like linked hands, the black arch stands; let one draw away, and it falls.

  3. 933.

    Giving up victory

velvadhu yaarkkum viruppam inaivukkuvellaa thiruthale ver

Everyone wants to win; union has a single root: not winning.

  4. 934.

    Before positions set

kuzhainda kaliman vanaiyalaam suttudaithaottai vanaiva tharidhu

Kneaded clay, soft and yielding, can be shaped; a shard of a pot fired and then broken is hard to shape.

Firing hardens clay for good; the pieces of a fired pot that breaks no longer yield to the hands as fresh clay does.

  5. 935.

    Forgiving without returning

poruthaar inaivaar enalvendaa poyyaamporuthalum serthalum veru

Do not say that those who have forgiven will come back together; that is false. Forgiving and coming back together are different things.

  6. 936.

    When waiting may fail

orumudis soozhalaik kaalam avizhkkumirumudis soozhalai yaar

Time loosens a tangle with one knot; who will loosen a tangle with two?

Each knot is a hurt that keeps a relationship tangled. Time can be trusted with one; for two, no untier is named.

  7. 937.

    Renewal proves the mending

ottiya kombin thalire uraikkumpirindusernda nadpin uyir

Only the new shoot on a joined branch tells of the life of a friendship once parted and come together again.

A branch joined onto a tree shows it has truly taken only when it puts out fresh leaves.

  8. 938.

    Owning our part

yaanpizhaithen endriruvar sollin inaivurumthaanpizhaithaan endraal azhivu

When both say ‘I was wrong’, they come together; when the words are ‘He was wrong’, ruin follows.

  9. 939.

    The cause remains

adimul pariyaa thinaindaar nadaiyiladimul nadathum pirivu

Those who join without drawing the thorn from the foot walk on, and the thorn leads them apart.

  10. 940.

    Repair can succeed

pilandadhai yaarum ariyaar poruthiyakaivazhi sollum maram

No one can tell that the wood was ever split; the wood tells of the hand that joined it.
