Chapter 96அதிகாரம் 96 இசைவு Harmony

Many parts fitting together.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 951.

    Holding each other up

serndaal nimirum suvarpirin thaalveezhumsaarpe suvarkkus suvar

Joined, a wall stands upright; apart, it falls. Nothing holds up a wall but a wall.

  2. 952.

    Strength in joining

otrainaar kattumunne atruvizhum naarthirithukkattinaal thernirkum kattu

A single strand snaps and falls before it can tie; strands twisted together and tied make the binding that holds a chariot standing.

  3. 953.

    Finding our place

orukal siridhendraan oppillai endraanvarisaiyaai vaithaan madhil

He called one stone small; he said it had no partner. He laid stones in a row: a wall.

The Tamil for ‘no partner’ also means ‘without equal’, so the stone is both alone and unmatched.

  4. 954.

    Working between sides

orizhaiyaal neyyaan nesavan irupuramumoodaadum kaiye thuni

A weaver does not weave with one thread; the hand that crosses back and forth between both sides is the cloth.

Each pass of the weaver’s hand lays one thread from side to side; cloth is nothing but that hand’s going and coming, row on row.

  5. 955.

    Less friction together

porundaa araikal araikkumosai kedkumporundin oliyar radhu

A grinding stone that does not fit is heard as it grinds; one that fits grinds in silence.

  6. 956.

    Hurt reaches across

orupuram patriya theeyin eriyaamarupuram vaadum maram

When fire catches one side of a tree, the other side, though it is not burning, withers.

  7. 957.

    Different voices together

veraai isaikkum kuzhalum muzhavamumkooraai isaippadhu pan

Flute and drum each sound in their own way; each sounding its part, they make melody.

  8. 958.

    Staying joined through disagreement

othadhe kolva thorumaiyan rovvaamaiyutrung kulaiyaa thinai

Accepting only what agrees with you is not oneness. A bond is what stays unshaken when disagreement comes.

The Tamil word for ‘bond’ also means a pair or a match: two that stay side by side.

  9. 959.

    Fit grows through use

pidithapin theynda thuduppu adaiyumviralvalaik ketra vadivu

An oar worn down by gripping takes on a shape that fits the curve of the fingers.

  10. 960.

    Shaping each other

theyndudheyn thondrin vadivaam irukalpolthoyndudhoyn thaava thuravu

Like two stones that wear and wear into the shape of one, a bond comes to be through mingling and mingling.
