Chapter 79அதிகாரம் 79 தொண்டு Service

Working for others' good.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 781.

    Taking all the credit

suvarkkulle paayndunirkum kambiyari yaadhusuvarnirkum ennum suvar

Not knowing the rod that stands right through it, the wall says, ‘The wall stands.’

  2. 782.

    Help without compassion

viralpunnil modhirame poottuvaar polaamarulariyaadh thondin kulam

The breed of service that knows no compassion is like people fastening a ring, of all things, onto a wounded finger.

  3. 783.

    The doer’s name fades

aarukadal serndapin aarendra permaraiyumaaruseythaar permaraiyum atru

Once a river has joined the sea, the name ‘river’ is gone; so goes the name of those who made a way for others’ good.

One Tamil word, aru, means ‘river’, ‘way’ and ‘good’. The verse uses it three times, so the doers share the river’s very name.

  4. 784.

    Work beneath the result

adikkallin mersumaiyai oormuzhudhum kaanumadikkallaik kaanpaa rilai

The whole town sees the load on the foundation stone; no one sees the stone.

  5. 785.

    Lost in the contribution

uppuk karaindadhanaal sorusuvaik kumkaraindauppin uruvarivaar yaar

Rice tastes good because salt has dissolved in it; who can know the form of the salt that has dissolved?

  6. 786.

    Unseen strain below

kodiyeri nirkum kodikkudh theriyaaadiyil nadungum kazhi

The climbing vine stands high, unaware of the pole trembling at its foot.

The Tamil word for vine, kodi, also means flag: a flag too climbs its pole and stands high.

  7. 787.

    Giving has limits

vatraadha ootrendru vaariyedup paaridaiyeootrum varandu padum

Even the spring thought never to run dry runs dry among those who scoop from it.

  8. 788.

    Giving the wrong help

eerathaal saayum suvarkku mazhaivendivaarik koduppadhuvo thondu

A wall already leans with damp: to pray for rain on it, and pour water on it with both hands, is that service?

  9. 789.

    Breakdown gets noticed

udainda kudathin olikedpaar neeraissumanda kudambesaa oor

The town hears the noise of the pot that broke; the pot that carried water goes without a word.

  10. 790.

    Making without claiming

maalaidh thoduthaval maalai yaniyaalevelai mudindadhen paal

She strings the garland, and she will not wear that garland. ‘The work is done,’ she says.
