Chapter 80அதிகாரம் 80 கடமை Duty
What a role asks.
791. Becoming what we do
ஓநாய்க் கிரவெல்லாம் காதோர்த்த மேய்ப்பவன்தானே யிரவாகும் காது
onaayk kiravellaam kaadhortha meyppavanthaane yiravaakum kaadhu
The shepherd who strains all night to hear the wolf becomes himself the night’s ear.
In the Tamil, ear and night become one thing: he is all listening, and the darkness itself seems to listen through him.
792. Who helps the helper
வண்ணான் வெளுக்கத் துணிவேண்டும் தன்துணிவண்ணானின் வண்ணான் எவன்
vannaan velukkadh thunivendum thanthunivannaanin vannaan evan
A washerman needs cloth to bleach; but for his own cloth, who is the washerman’s washerman?
793. Doing our part

vidiyumen rennaan vidivikkum kozhividiyal kadane kural
The rooster that brings the dawn does not tell itself, ‘Dawn is coming.’ Its voice is the dawn’s duty, and nothing more.
794. Who bears the blame
சுமப்பவன் தோள்வலி சொல்லும் சுமத்தியவன்நெஞ்சம் சுமக்கும் பழி
sumappavan tholvali sollum sumathiyavannenjam sumakkum pazhi
The carrier’s shoulder speaks its ache; the one who loaded him carries the blame in his heart.
795. Caught between demands
இருமுனையும் தின்னும் எரிநடுவே நிற்கும்ஒருதிரியின் வாழ்வு கடன்
irumunaiyum thinnum erinaduve nirkumorudhiriyin vaazhvu kadan
One wick stands in a fire that eats it at both ends: its life is duty.
The Tamil word for duty, kadan, also means debt: the wick’s life may be something owed.
796. When duty is done
ஆறுகடந் தோன்படகைத் தோளிற் சுமப்பதென்னதீர்ந்தகடன் தீரா தெனல்
aarukadan thonpadakaidh tholir sumappadhennatheerndakadan theeraa thenal
He has crossed the river and still carries the boat on his shoulder: that is calling a settled debt unsettled.
Kadan means both debt and duty: money already repaid, or a duty already done.
797. Duty meets family

sengol pidithaval thanmakanaidh theerppidinummangaadhu semmaiyin kol
Even if the woman who holds the sceptre sentences her own son, the rod of rightness does not dim.
798. Duty gives direction

A river with no bank spills its water away unchecked; the duty one carries out is the bank.
799. The one who stays
மாறும் பலதோள் மறையும் கடனொடுமாறா ஒருதோள் மலை
maarum paladhol maraiyum kadanodumaaraa orudhol malai
Many shoulders change, and vanish along with the duty; the one shoulder that does not change is a mountain.
A shoulder is whoever takes up a burden; many arrive with a task and are gone with it. Kadan means both duty and debt.
800. Duty becomes life
வலிந்து செயுங்கால் வலித்ததெனத் தோன்றும்பழகிச் செயுங்கா லுயிர்
valindu seyungaal valithadhenadh thondrumpazhakis seyungaa luyir
Forced, a deed looks forced; practised, it is life.
In Tamil, vali means both to force and to ache; uyir, life, also means breath and soul.
