Chapter 7அதிகாரம் 7 வேட்கை Desire
Wanting as engine and as bond.
61. Wanting to stop wanting
vendiyadhu petrapin vendaamai vendudhalvendudhalin veran radhu
Wanting not to want, after getting what was wanted, is no different from wanting.
62. What reaching brings
neeril theriyum nilavaik kavarumunneerin kulirariyum kai
Before it closes on the moon that shows in the water, the hand knows the water’s coolness.
The same water that holds the moon’s image is cool to the touch.
63. Wanting shut away
kaiyul adaitha kanikaniyum munnazhukummeyyul adaitha avaa
A fruit shut in the hand rots before it ripens; so does desire shut inside the body.
64. Wanting finds another outlet
kinatradaithaal veru kinaraakum vedkaimanarkasiyum neerin marai
Block a well and desire becomes another well: the secret of water seeping through sand.
65. Wanting changes us
irumbupon naakumendre kaayschuvaal oodhumirumbaakum oodhuvaal nenju
She heats the iron and blows on the fire, sure it will turn to gold; what turns to iron is her own heart.
66. Recognising your own want
pirarneers sunaikandu thondrumthan thaakamurangum kinatrin kural
The thirst you feel on seeing someone else’s spring is the voice of a sleeping well.
67. Wanting gathers force
poottavizhnda naaymudhalil paayndadhe kattirundanaadkalelaam konda visai
The clasp gives way, and the dog’s first leap is the force of all the days it was tied.
68. Freedom leaves a bond
siraimeendaan sitraraiyin aschuvarai naadumuraiyindrip patrum ulam
Back from prison, a man seeks out the wall of a small room; the mind, unsheltered, clings.
The Tamil word for ‘shelter’, urai, means both a sheath or cover and a dwelling: the mind is both unprotected and without a home.
69. Desire wears life down
kodhikkum punalul punale surungumkodhikkum avaavul uyir
In boiling water, the water itself grows less; in boiling desire, life itself grows less.
70. Living only for desire
vedkai yilaadhavar vaazhvum verundoduvedkaikke vaazhvaar viraku
The life of those without desire is an empty husk; those who live for desire alone are firewood.
