Chapter 62அதிகாரம் 62 தற்செயல் Chance
What happens outside one's control.
611. Where we land
othaviru vithinul ondroondrum ondrularumvithandru veezhnda idam
Of two seeds alike, one takes root and the other dries up; it is not the seed, it is the place where it fell.
612. Limits of control
vidhaithavan neerpaayschi vermulaikkak kandaanvidhaikkul nuzhaiyaa viral
He sowed, he watered, he saw the root come; no finger enters the seed.
Sowing and watering happen outside the seed; the root begins within it, where no hand reaches.
613. Blaming the unlucky
otha vilakkoliyul ondraviyum kaatradikkamatradhanaik kutramen paar
Among lamps that burn alike, a gust puts one out, and they call it that lamp’s fault.
614. An unearned opening
thaanuzhaik kaadhadhor vaayil thirandadhanpinvarum vaayil pala
Once a door opens that one never laboured for, many doors follow.
615. Luck mistaken for skill
oduneer thandadhellaam thanvaliyen rodumeenvaadukulam kaattum vazhakku
A fish that runs in running water counts all the water gave it as its own strength; the drying pond shows how the case stands.
The drying pond is the same water with its flow gone. vazhakku means both ‘the way things truly are’ and ‘a court case’.
616. Whose stories survive
karaiserndaar neendiyadhaik kooruvaar naanaarkaraiyilaar moozhkal marai
Those who reached the shore tell of their swimming, unashamed; those who had no shore drown out of sight.
617. Choice has limits
therndeduthom enpaar vazhiyai vazhinammaidhtherndedukkum sollaap padi
People say, ‘We chose the path.’ The path chooses us too, and that goes unsaid.
618. More than we intended
kanidhindraar kottai yerindaar erindamaniyil mulaithadhu maa
They ate the fruit and threw away the stone; from the seed they threw, a mango sprouted.
619. Sustained and ended from outside
sudarppatrum neyyum sudarkkedukkum kaatrumorudhiriyin vaazhnaal irandu
The oil that holds the flame and the wind that kills the flame: a wick’s life is these two.
620. Once is not enough
orumurai yothisaithal tharseyal meendumadheyisai meendaal isai
To fall into tune once is chance; if that same tune comes back, it is music.
