541. Skill beyond tools
கூர்த்தது வேலுங் கருவியு மல்லவேகூர்த்ததக் கொல்லன் விழி
koorthadhu velung karuviyu mallavekoorthadhak kollan vizhi
It was not the spear that was sharp, nor the tool; that smith’s eye was sharp.
542. Knowing the signs
கிளியொலிக்கும் காட்டில் கிளியடங்கும் நேரம்தெளிந்தறிவார் வேங்கை வரவு
kiliyolikkum kaattil kiliyadangum neramthelindarivaar vengai varavu
In a forest loud with parrots, when the parrots fall silent, the discerning know the tiger is coming.
543. Skill moves trouble
வல்லான் இடர்வரின் மாற்றுவான் கல்லான்இடரில் இறுகுவான் நின்று
vallaan idarvarin maatruvaan kallaanidaril irukuvaan nindru
When trouble comes, the able turn it aside; the unskilled stand within it and stiffen.
544. Knowing through making
முறுக்கிய கைக்குத் தெரியுங் கயிற்றின்இறுக்கம் அவிழும் இடம்
murukkiya kaikkudh theriyung kayitrinirukkam avizhum idam
The hand that twisted the rope knows where its tightness loosens.
545. Experience anticipates form
குடநூறு செய்தவங்கை மண்ணைத் தொடும்முன்குடமென்றே தேடும் வடிவு
kudanooru seythavangai mannaidh thodummunkudamendre thedum vadivu
Before it touches the clay, a palm that has made a hundred pots seeks the shape of the pot.
546. Ease mistaken for simplicity
எளிதென் றிகழ்வர் இயற்றியபின் எண்ணார்எளிதாக் கியதே அறிவு
elidhen rikazhvar iyatriyapin ennaarelidhaak kiyadhe arivu
Once a thing is done, people dismiss it as easy and think no more about it; making it easy is wisdom.
547. Knowledge sharpens perception
மருந்தறிவாள் காட்டில் மரமெல்லாம் வேறுமருந்தறியாள் கண்ணில் புதர்
marundarivaal kaattil maramellaam verumarundariyaal kannil pudhar
To the woman who knows medicine, no two trees in the forest are alike; to the one who does not, it is all one bush.
548. Working through mistakes
வல்லான் பிழையுள் வழிகாண்பான் கல்லாதான்நல்லவற்றுள் காணான் நலம்
vallaan pizhaiyul vazhikaanpaan kallaadhaannallavatrul kaanaan nalam
The skilled find a way through mistakes; the unlearned, among good things, miss the good.
549. Knowing makes the difference
ஓர்விரலால் தீர்ப்பாள் முடிச்சை இருகையால்தோற்பார் அறியாத் தொழில்
orviralaal theerppaal mudischai irukaiyaalthorpaar ariyaadh thozhil
With one finger she undoes the knot that others fail at with both hands: a craft few know.
550. Declaring learning finished
தேர்ந்தோம்என் றோர்ந்த மனமிறுகும் தேர்வெனும்நீர்வற்றி நிற்கும் நிலம்
therndomen rornda manamirukum thervenumneervatri nirkum nilam
The mind that says, ‘We have examined it,’ hardens: dry ground, its water of inquiry gone.
