The body as home, instrument and teacher.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 431.

    Noticing the body

aayiram poomel nadandum ariyaakkaalormul arivikkum thaal

Across a thousand flowers the foot goes unfelt; a single thorn makes the foot known.

  2. 432.

    Before we notice

kanalil iruppaan kanalariyaan tholilpunalaai viyarthadhe thee

One who dwells in fire does not know the fire; the water sweated out on his skin is the fire itself.

  3. 433.

    Acting before speaking

koovumun kaineelum veezhporulaik kooviyapinnaavasaiyum naanpidithen endru

Something falls: before the cry, a hand reaches out; after the cry, a tongue says, ‘I caught it.’

  4. 434.

    Attention before sound

kandrin vayitrazhukai kaadhir pukumunnenindrukandrai nokkum pasu

Before the calf’s belly-cry has entered her ear, the cow stands still and looks at the calf.

A ‘belly-cry’ comes from deep in the body: the cry of hunger, or of any deep need.

  5. 435.

    Knowing without naming

pizhindadhan perariyaa thenum pizhindavazhiyariyum kaiyin manam

Though the name of what was squeezed is not known, the scent on the hand knows the way of the squeezing.

  6. 436.

    We miss our own decline

aadai nekizhndadhandru aalnekizhndaan thannudalvaadiya naalariyum noy

His garment did not slacken; he did. The day his body wasted, the illness knew it.

His clothes hang loose because he has grown thin; the illness registers the wasting before he notices.

  7. 437.

    Confidence meets limits

thaangu menathalai sollum sumaiyadhanaidhthaangaa thariyum thasai

The head says the load can be borne; the flesh, failing to bear it, knows.

  8. 438.

    Feeling the damage later

aadungaal kelaa adimurivai aattamatranaalondril kedkum elumbu

While the dancing lasts, a break in the step goes unheard; on a day when there is no dancing, the bone hears it.

  9. 439.

    Movement changes our world

nadappavan kannukku naadelaam kaadsikidappavan kannukkuk koodu

To the eye of one who walks, the whole land is a spectacle; to the eye of one who lies down, an enclosure.

  10. 440.

    When pain is missing

valikkaadha punnai valikkumen rennaarvalikkaa thiruppadhe noy

No one expects a painless wound to hurt; the painlessness itself is the disease.
