Chapter 43அதிகாரம் 43 காலம் Time
Time's passing, and timing.
421. Catching the moment
kaatradikkum naalil polidhootri nerkondaalkaatradangik koottum padhar
She winnowed while the wind blew and took the paddy; what is swept up once the wind has dropped is chaff.
Winnowing means tossing threshed grain so the wind blows away the light chaff and the heavy paddy (rice grain) falls back.
422. Strength over time
melliya noolaal pinikkum kayiraakumkaalam murukkiya pin
Soft thread, once time has twisted it, becomes a rope that binds.
423. When nights stretch
thanmooschu mattume kedkum araikkullethanmoosche neettum iraa
In a room where nothing is heard but your own breath, your own breath draws out the night.
424. Days spend us
naamo kazhippadhu naalenpar naalandrothaame kazhippadhu nam
People say we spend the days. Is it not the days that spend us?
425. The chance closes
orunaalin eeraman kaiviral erkumpalanaalin kaayndaman kal
Clay wet for one day yields to the fingers; clay dried for many days is stone.
426. Too early, too late
mutrumun koythaal kasakkum pazhuthapinpatrinaal sindum kani
Plucked before it is full-grown, the fruit is bitter; touched once it is past ripe, it drops.
427. Timing outweighs force
kaalam arindaan kanaiyondre podhumenpaankaalam ariyaan padai
One who knows the moment says a single arrow is enough; one who does not needs an army.
428. Pain stretches time
thoondil vizhungiya meenin kanamondruneenda paruvam nikar
For a fish that has swallowed the hook, one moment is a long season.
429. What grows untended
payirkaadh thalippaa nuzhavan kalaiyedaanaalir kalaiye payir
The farmer guards the crop and feeds it; on a day he does not weed, the weed alone is the crop.
430. When waiting ends
poruthirundaan ponnaal varumendre ponnaalporuthirukkaan vanda pozhudhu
He waited, sure the golden day would come; when the golden day came, he would not wait a moment more.
A ‘golden day’ in Tamil is a long-hoped-for day of good fortune.
