Chapter 45அதிகாரம் 45 உணவு Nourishment
What feeds body, mind and spirit.
441. Need gives direction
neerperaa verum thirumbum nilathadiyileeram irukkum thisai
Even a root that has had no water turns, underground, toward the side where the earth is damp.
442. Hunger narrows attention
sotrumanam kondavazhi yallaal pasippavarkkunaatrisaiyum illai nakar
For the hungry there is no town in any direction except down the road that smells of rice.
443. Hunger changes sight
kannil pasipukundaal kaanpadhellaam soraakumvinnin mukilum unavu
When hunger gets into the eye, all it sees is rice; even the cloud in the sky is food.
444. When hunger turns fierce
thannelvai vandapasi thaanuraikkum venduvadhaippinnelvai vandapasi pei
Hunger that comes in its own time tells what it needs; hunger that comes past its time is a demon.
Its own time is the hour hunger is usually fed. Hunger past its time has gone on unanswered beyond that hour.
445. Want humbles the fussy
uppilaas soren rudharinaan venneerinuppaik kanakkidum naa
He pushed the rice away for want of salt; his tongue counts the salt in hot water.
The hot water is plain heated water, which has almost no salt to count.
446. Care in daily cooking
naadorum aakkal aridhandru naadorumvenduva thaakkal aridhu
Preparing something every day is not hard; preparing what is wanted every day is hard.
447. Others’ hunger in the taste
unnaa thavarmun uvandunpaan sotrukkulkanneer karaikkum suvai
Whoever eats with relish in front of those who have not eaten tastes tears melted into his rice.
448. Company changes the meal
kalandunnak kanda kadaisorum thenaamalandunnil thenum pulaal
Even the meanest rice, eaten together, is honey; even honey, eaten in distress, is flesh.
In Tamil tradition, pulaal (flesh) is food that repels. To call a food flesh is to call it revolting.
449. The mind needs feeding
oonuk kunavundaam ullathir killaiyeloonunda thellaam pinam
If the flesh has food and the mind has none, all the flesh has fed on is carrion.
450. Sharing feeds us too
virundillaa vundi vayitruk kunavaamvirundunda vundi uyirkku
Food no guest has eaten feeds the stomach; food a guest has eaten feeds the life.
