Chapter 40அதிகாரம் 40 கவலை Worry
Rumination over what might happen.
391. The weight beforehand
thaangum mudhuku thalaraadhu thaangaamunengum maname edai
The back that bears the load does not give way; the mind that frets before the load comes is itself the weight.
392. Suffering it repeatedly
saavaan orumuraiye saavaan ninaippavarnaavil palamurai saavu
A man dies once, no more; on the tongues of those who dwell on it, death comes many times.
393. Worry creates trouble
arippedukkum endrusori yumviral thaanearippaakum tholukku noy
The finger that scratches lest the skin should itch is itself the itch that ails the skin.
394. Care without relief
paayscha vazhiyindrel vaanmazhaineer vellamaamtheerkkum vazhiyilaa anpu
Rain from the sky, with no channel to lead it off, becomes a flood. And love with no way to ease it.
In Tamil one word, ‘way’, serves both lines: the channel the rain lacks is the way the love lacks.
395. Losing today already
indrundu naalai yilaiyenum aschathaalindrundu enpadhum il
Through fear that what is here today is gone tomorrow, even its being here today is lost.
396. Worry locks again
thirumbavum poottiya thaalaidh thirappaalthirumbavum poottum manam
Again she opens the locked bolt; again the mind locks.
What her hand unfastens, the mind fastens again. In Tamil ‘locks’ has no object: the mind may relock the bolt, or lock itself shut.
397. Worry is the ruin
kavalaivid daalvarum kedenpaan kedokavalaiyul vaazhva thenal
‘Let go of worry and ruin comes,’ he says. Answer him: is it not ruin to live in worry?
398. Rehearsing the arrival
varumo varumendre vaaduvaar nenjulvarumunne vandadhaam noy
‘Will it come? It will come,’ they pine; and before it comes, the sickness is already in their hearts.
399. Still but exhausted
kidandavan theyndaan kidandapadi nenjulnadandadhoru kodi thadam
He lay there, and stayed lying there, and wore away, while in his heart he walked ten million tracks.
400. Before the real encounter
ennathul vendraan iravellaam kaalaiyilkannedhir nindraan piran
All night he won in his thoughts; in the morning the other man stood before his eyes.
