Chapter 25அதிகாரம் 25 உறுதி Commitment

Binding oneself to a person, task or path.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 241.

    What commitment makes possible

    கட்டியநாண் யாழின் குரலாகும் நாண்கழன்றால்விட்டகம்பி வெற்றுக் கொடி

kattiyanaan yaazhin kuralaakum naankazhandraalvittakambi vetruk kodi

A string tied fast is the harp’s voice; when it slips loose, it is a bare, empty strand.

  2. 242.

    Promises before others

    பலர்முன்னர்ச் சொன்னசொல் பட்டயமாம் தன்னுள்உரைத்தசொல் நீர்மேல் வரை

palarmunnars sonnasol pattayamaam thannuluraithasol neermel varai

A word spoken before many is a deed that binds; a word spoken only to oneself is a line drawn on water.

  3. 243.

    The promise remains owed

    கடன்றீர்ப்ப னென்றாள் மறுநாளும் என்றாள்கடன்றீர்க்கும் சொல்லே கடன்

kadandreerppa nendraal marunaalum endraalkadandreerkkum solle kadan

“I will clear the debt,” she said, and the next day she said it again: the word meant to clear the debt is the debt.

Kadan means both a debt and a duty: the promise to repay becomes something she owes as well.

  4. 244.

    Held by our commitments

    பிடித்த கயிறே பிடிப்பாகும் கையைப்பிடித்ததுவே கட்டும் கயிறு

piditha kayire pidippaakum kaiyaippidithadhuve kattum kayiru

The rope the hand grasped becomes its hold; what the hand held now holds the hand, and binds it.

The Tamil word for ‘hold’ means both a support you grip and an attachment that grips you.

  5. 245.

    Keeping our word

    சொன்னது மாற்றுவார் சூறை அயல்முன்னர்ச்சொன்னது காப்பார் சுவர்

sonnadhu maatruvaar soorai ayalmunnarssonnadhu kaappaar suvar

Those who unsay what was said are a whirlwind; those who stand by words spoken before others are a wall.

  6. 246.

    What one exception starts

    கட்டிய வேலிக் கிடையொருகால் விட்டாலும்விட்ட இடமே வழி

kattiya velik kidaiyorukaal vittaalumvitta idame vazhi

Leave a gap in a built fence even once, and the place you left becomes the path.

  7. 247.

    An unkept word is loss

    கொடுத்தசொல் காப்பான் புகழ்பெறுவான் காவான்கொடுத்ததும் போனதும் ஒன்று

koduthasol kaappaan pukazhperuvaan kaavaankoduthadhum ponadhum ondru

One who keeps the word he gave wins renown; for one who does not, what he gave is as good as gone.

The Tamil leaves ‘what he gave’ open: his word, or anything else he has handed over.

  8. 248.

    Keeping our attention forward

    கயிற்றின்மேல் நின்றகால் பின்னோக்கின் வீழ்வர்நயப்பது முன்வைத்த கால்

kayitrinmel nindrakaal pinnokkin veezhvarnayappadhu munvaitha kaal

Those whose feet are on the rope fall when they look back; the foot worth wanting is the one set forward.

  9. 249.

    When turning back helps

    செல்லும் வழியே சுவர்முட்டும் என்றால்திரும்புதல் செல்லும் வழி

sellum vazhiye suvarmuttum endraalthirumbudhal sellum vazhi

When the way you are going meets a wall, turning back is the way you go.

  10. 250.

    Staying by choice

    போகின்ற வாயிலில் நிற்றலே நிற்றலாம்போகாத வாயில் சிறை

pokindra vaayilil nitrale nitralaampokaadha vaayil sirai

Standing at a door that leads out: that alone is standing. A door that does not lead out: a prison.
