Chapter 24அதிகாரம் 24 நெஞ்சுரம் Courage
Acting rightly despite fear.
231. Courage can tremble
nadungaa nilaikkar koliyundo naalumnadungum vilakke vilakku
Does the standing stone that never trembles give any light? Only the lamp that trembles day after day is a lamp.
232. Daring to begin
kaalvaidh thapinpadi thondrum irulidaikkaalvaikkaa thaarkkillai ner
In the dark, the step appears after the foot is set down; for those who will not set a foot down in the dark, there is no way at all.
233. Courage for others
thanakkanji oduvaan thannuyir kaappaanpirarkkanji nirpavane mel
He who runs, afraid for himself, saves his own life; he who stands, afraid for others, is the greater.
234. Refusing despite dependence
vaazhvalippaar munnum maruthuraikkum thinmaiyeveezhvanjum nenjin viral
To stand before those who give you your living and say no to them: that firmness is the courage of a heart afraid to fall.
‘Falling’ can mean losing one’s living or falling from what is right; the heart is afraid, and still refuses.
235. Knowing and acting
anjaa thavanallan anjaan arindunindraananjiyum aatrupa van
The one who does not fear is not the fearless one. The fearless one has understood, holds his ground, and carries on even while afraid.
236. Strength over oneself
valikondu veezhthuvaan vallano thannaivalikondu nirpaan vali
Is he strong who throws others down by strength? He who takes hold of himself by strength and stands: he is strength.
237. Resisting the easy way
aatrin thisaimaatral aatruvaan aatraleaatrodu podhal elidhu
To turn a river from its course is the strength of one who can; to go with the river is easy.
238. Brave elsewhere, afraid here
ongu thiraineendi yaazhkadandaan thanmanaiyulthengum mozhikkanju vaan
He swam the towering waves and crossed the deep; in his own house he fears a word that hangs in the air.
In Tamil the word lies pooled like still water: a word he has never dared say there, or talk once spoken there that hangs on.
239. Speaking amid silence
palarirukka yaarumor sollaadha neramoruthisol kallaai vizhum
Many are gathered, and no one says a word; one woman’s word drops into that silence like a stone.
240. Calling fear wisdom
anji yadanguvaan sollum arivennumpanjanaiyil thoongum puli
The man who shrinks back in fear talks of wisdom; that wisdom is a soft cotton mattress, and on it a tiger lies asleep.
The tiger is the man himself, or the strength in him, asleep on the comfort of calling his fear wisdom.
