Chapter 26அதிகாரம் 26 அடக்கம் Restraint
Holding back in the moment.
251. Strength held back
vaaludaiyaan vaaladakki vaazhvaan avanvaalevaalaa kidakkum vali
He who has a sword lives with his sword held back; that sword, lying idle, is his strength.
252. Knowing when to stop
vettiya kalmel vazhuvarivaar vettaamalvitta idamarivaan kai
Many know the flaw on the stone that was cut; one knows the place left uncut, and the hand is his.
A cut in stone cannot be undone. In Tamil, ‘hand’ also means skill: the work a hand does.
253. Too late to stop
vilneetha ambukku veruvazhi yaaruraippaarnillendra sollum sevidu
Once the arrow has left the bow, who can show it another path? Even ‘Stop!’ meets deafness.
254. Seeking relief brings harm
aaraa namaischal kalaiya nakangeerinveraam pudhuppun vilaivu
Nails set to clear an itch that will not settle leave, instead, a new sore.
255. Trying not to think
ninaiyaa thirukka ninaippavar nenjulninaive nirainda nilai
Those who set their thought on not thinking have hearts full of nothing but thought.
256. Fear called restraint
anji yadangiya thandradak kambulinenjil nariyin kural
What goes quiet out of fear is not restraint; it is the cry of a jackal inside a tiger’s chest.
257. Anger still active
naanennum koondil adaipatta seetramenaalung kizhikkum ukir
Shame is the cage, and the anger shut inside it is a claw that tears every day.
258. The heart defies control
vellam adikkumel kattum anaiyunduullam adikkumel il
When the flood pounds, there is a dam to hold it back; when the heart pounds, there is none.
259. Practice builds restraint
orunaal adakkam orukal adukkaamperunaal adakkam madhil
One day’s restraint is one stone laid; many days’ restraint is a wall.
260. Inaction shares guilt
kolvaarmun kanmoodi nitral adakkameninkolvaar kanakkil ezhudhu
If standing with eyes shut before those who kill is called restraint, write it down on the killers’ side.
