Chapter 23அதிகாரம் 23 முயற்சி Effort

Exertion toward an end.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 221.

    Taking it on

etravan tholil sumaiyillai elaadhaantholil irakum edai

On the shoulder that has taken it up, no burden; on the shoulder that has not, even a feather weighs.

  2. 222.

    Small efforts build

puzhudhiyir sitradi sitradi vaikkavazhiyaam theruvaam nakar

Small step, small step in the dust, and the dust becomes a path, becomes a street, becomes a city.

  3. 223.

    What effort leaves

kottimudidh tholin olimaayum kottiyavarthattiyakai neengaadh thazhumbu

When the drumming is done, the drum’s sound fades; the mark on the hand that beat it does not.

  4. 224.

    Work out of sight

asaiyaa maramendraar atrapin kandaarisaiyaa thiyangiya ver

They called it the unmoving tree. After it was severed, they saw its roots, which had been moving without a sound.

  5. 225.

    Work leaves evidence

noorumurai maavaraitha kallin vazhuvazhuppekooraamal koorum kural

The stone that has ground flour a hundred times: its smoothness is a voice that speaks without speaking.

  6. 226.

    The unseen cost

oonurukki aakkiyadhai oorariyum aakkiyavanthaanurukal yaarari vaar

The town knows what was made with melting flesh; who knows that the maker himself was melting?

In Tamil, ‘melting the flesh’ means toil that wastes the body; the same words can also mean rendering meat to cook a dish.

  7. 227.

    Marks cannot tell everything

nindraval nindridathin theyvu nilamariyumsendrapin sollaas suvadu

The ground knows the wear where she stood; after she has gone, the trace does not tell.

A mark remains without giving any account of the one who left it.

  8. 228.

    Who gets the credit

kooraiyin keezhnin ravarmazhaiyai vaazhthuvarkooraiyid daannanain thaan

Those under the roof praise the rain; the man who built the roof got soaked.

  9. 229.

    An essential part missing

neyyai vilakkil niraithum thiriyindrikkaiyir pidithaan irul

Though he filled the lamp to the brim with ghee, it had no wick; he held it in his hand, and held darkness.

  10. 230.

    What effort costs

theyndakal theyvin alavariyaar theythavantheyndakaiye sollum selavu

People cannot tell how far a worn stone has worn away; only the worn hand of the man who wore it tells what was spent.
