Chapter 130அதிகாரம் 130 துக்கம் Grief
Mourning.
1291. Still reaching
izhandapal saarnaakkudh thedumadhu polaizhandadhaidh thedum unarvu
As the tongue searches the gap where a lost tooth was, so feeling searches for what has been lost.
1292. Searching despite forgetting
sethaarai nenjam marandidinum kaiviralkalsethaaraidh thedum seyal
The heart may forget the dead; seeking the dead is the work of the fingers.
1293. Grieving what never was
vaaraadha neerukku vettiya vaaykkaalizhappen rariyaa thulaku
A channel cut for water that never came is a loss the world does not know.
1294. Habit speaks
irandakuzhan thaikkuriya sollondru sonnaalpirandadhaval vaayppazhak kam
She said a word kept for the dead child; what was born was the old habit of her mouth.
In the Tamil, ‘dead’ and ‘born’ echo each other in sound: the child has died, yet something is still born.
1295. No one there
suvarmukam thottuviral sorndumeelum paayilavarmukam thediya kai
On the mat, the hand reaches for that face; its fingers touch the face of the wall, droop, and come back.
1296. Tears cannot obey
azharku niruthen ruraippavar polumazhukai niruthen pavar
Those who tell someone who is weeping to stop crying are like those who tell a fire to stop.
1297. Love lives in tears
anpuk kiruppida mindrenir kanneereanpuk kalikku midam
When love has no home, only tears give it one.
1298. Tears linger
mazhaivitta pinnum maranizhalil thoorumazhudhadhundu nenjamum aangu
After the rain has stopped, water still drips in the shade of the tree; the heart too has known weeping like that.
1299. Grief becomes familiar
sollis solippazhakum sethaarper naavirkumelladh thazhumbaakum mel
The name of the dead, said and said until it is familiar, in time thickens into a scar on the tongue.
1300. Understanding as grief eases
aarum punalin alaiyadangak kaltheriyumaarum thuyarin arivu
When the river’s waves settle, the stone beneath them shows; when grief settles, the understanding of it shows.
