Losing what one had.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1281.

    Support taken for granted

nindraar nizhalen rariyaar nizhalneenginnindra idamum veyil

Those who stand in the shade do not know it is shade; if the shade goes, even the place where they stood turns to glare.

  2. 1282.

    Noticed as it leaves

aninda valaiyalin aarppariyaal kaiyilkazhandravudan kedkum oli

She does not notice the jingle of the bangle she wears; the moment it slips from her hand, she hears a sound.

  3. 1283.

    The loss stays

nirkum porulen rirundaarkku neengiyapinnirkum porule izhavu

For those who believed what they had was what lasts, once it has gone, what lasts is the loss.

  4. 1284.

    Loss adds weight

thoonondru saayndadhai vaayaal uraikkaareltholaal uraippar sumai

If the mouth does not tell that the pillar has given way, the shoulder tells it with the load it carries.

  5. 1285.

    Reckoning after destruction

nindramaram vettiyapin nervalaiyam ennuvaarkondrapin kooruvaar mooppu

After the standing tree is cut down, they count its rings; after a life is taken, they speak of its age.

A felled tree’s growth rings, counted on the stump, show its years.

  6. 1286.

    Undone in a moment

iravelaam nootra silandi viralondrusendridas sindum adhu

A spider spins all night; one finger passes through, and what it spun scatters.

  7. 1287.

    Missing the weight

sumaiyirunda naalin suvadariyum tholesumaiyatra naalin sumai

The shoulder knows the trace of the days it carried a burden; on the day with no burden, that shoulder is the burden.

  8. 1288.

    What remains changed

azhuthiyakai poyinum ammiyilor pallamazhuthiya kaipol nilai

The hand that pressed has gone; the hollow in the grinding stone stays, as though the hand still pressed.

Spices are ground by hand on a flat stone; years of pressing wear a hollow into it.

  9. 1289.

    Loss measures presence

oliyizhandaal thondrum irulmun nirundavelischadh thalave irul

When light is lost, darkness appears, and the darkness is exactly as great as the light that was there before.

  10. 1290.

    A place holds absence

oruvar akandra verunjuvar pesumiruvar irunda idam

One has gone from where two once lived; the bare wall speaks.
