Releasing one's hold.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1301.

    Care without possession

patri yirukkir sidhaiyum panithulimatradhai nokkin malar

Grip a dewdrop tight and it breaks apart; look at it, and it is a flower.

Squeezed, a dewdrop is only water on the fingers; left where it lies, it shines among the petals.

  2. 1302.

    Force tightens the hold

valithaal irukum mudischu purattimelithaal avizhum kayiru

Pull on a knot and it grips harder; turn it back and ease it, and it comes undone into plain rope.

  3. 1303.

    Release can protect

irukap pidithadhor kombu murindaalviduvadhe kaakkum viral

If a branch gripped tight snaps, letting go is what saves the fingers.

  4. 1304.

    Clinging to old selves

maarumudal maaraa mukamenpaan kannaadiverukaad dumnaal azhum

The man who says, ‘The body changes, not the face,’ weeps on the day the mirror shows him otherwise.

  5. 1305.

    Growing beyond old selves

mulaithavidhai yottaidh thurakkum thuravaalkilaithezhuva thellaam pudhidhu

The sprouted seed lets go of its shell; by that letting go, all that branches upward is new.

  6. 1306.

    Anger still holds

viduthalum patre sinathaal viduthaalviduthadhan pere veruppu

Even letting go is a hold; let go in anger, and its name is hatred.

  7. 1307.

    Attachment outlasts release

poonkazhatrip pottakazhudh thendrumandap poonvadivaikkaanumidam thedum thasai

The ornament is taken from the neck and laid down; yet the flesh is always searching for the place where its shape can be found.

  8. 1308.

    Love allows departure

siraku mulaithapin koodu siraiyaamsirakai viduppadhe thaai

Once the wings have grown, the nest is a prison; to let the wing go is to be a mother.

  9. 1309.

    Responsibility for release

kattiya kaiye kazhatrum kazhatraakkaalkattiya kaiye vilangu

The hand that tied is the hand that unties; if it does not untie, that same hand is the fetter.

  10. 1310.

    Life opens with release

pidikkap pidikkas sirukum vidukkavidukka viriyum ulaku

The more you tighten your grip on the world, the smaller it grows; the more you loosen your hold, the wider it grows.
