The self that takes itself as the centre.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 121.

    Everyone feels central

parandaveli nirporkku yaavarkkum thaamenaduvendre thondrum nilam

To each one standing on the open plain, the land seems to lie with them at its centre.

  2. 122.

    Self-concern narrows

naanennum noolizhaiyaal neythavalai yulnuzhaindaalvaanum orusaan alavu

Whoever enters the net woven from the thread of ‘I’ finds even the sky no wider than a hand-span.

  3. 123.

    How large “I” is

yaanenpaan nirpaan nizhalalavu naadorumyaamenpaan nirpaan nilam

Whoever says “I” stands, day after day, the size of a shadow; whoever says “we” stands as the ground.

A shadow lengthens and shrinks; the ground remains.

  4. 124.

    Failing to see others

pirarvizhiyil thannuruvam theduvaan kandaanpiraruruvam kaanaak kurai

The man who looks in other people’s eyes for his own reflection has found his failing: he does not see them.

  5. 125.

    Chasing ourselves

thannizhalaidh thaanmidhikka nindraal adiyedukkummunne nakarum nizhal

When someone sets out to tread on their own shadow, the shadow goes on before the foot.

  6. 126.

    Our own weight

sumandaan sumandaan sumaiyariyaan sorndaansumaiyandru thaane sumai

He carried and carried, never knowing his burden, until he gave out. The burden was not the load; he himself was the burden.

  7. 127.

    Making room for others

yaanendraan neenginar neeyendraan nervandaarthaanendraan thannodu thaan

One man said ‘I’, and people left him; one said ‘you’, and people came near; one said ‘myself’, and was left alone with himself.

  8. 128.

    Looking beyond ourselves

karuvizhi thannaik karudhaa thadhanaalkaruvizhi kaanum ulaku

The pupil of the eye does not regard itself, and so it sees the world.

  9. 129.

    Forgetting ourselves together

aalamara verkal pinaiyumidam ovvoruverthaanenum permarakkum man

In the soil where banyan roots twine together, each root forgets the name it went by: ‘I’.

  10. 130.

    Ego at home

yaanilaa illam inidhirukkum yaanendraanthaanilaa illamum il

A home without ‘I’ is pleasant; for the man who said ‘I’, no such home exists.

The ‘I’ he insisted on goes with him into every home. The Tamil word for home also means household and family.
