Chapter 128அதிகாரம் 128 மன்னிப்பு Forgiveness
Releasing a wrong done to oneself.
1271. Release from within
kannul vizhunda manalaik kazhuvuvaankanneer viduppadhe kai
The way to wash out sand that has fallen into the eye is to let the eye’s own tears flow.
1272. Forgiveness cannot be demanded
theeyaal sudappatta kaanakam pookkumotheeyittaal pookkendra podhu
Will the forest the fire burned bloom when the woman who set the fire tells it, ‘Bloom’?
1273. Hiding is not forgiveness
marappom marappo meninumadhu maatralmaraippom maraippom enal
‘We will forget, we will forget’ is ‘we will hide, we will hide’ with one sound altered.
In Tamil, ‘forget’ (mara) and ‘hide’ (marai) differ by a single vowel.
1274. Saying is not releasing
neermel ezhuthaai viduthenen raarnenjilpaarmel ezhuthaai vadu
Those who said they had let it go like writing on water carry it in their heart as a scar, like writing on earth.
1275. Release makes room
viduthaan verungai niraiyum pidithaanniraindakai kaayum kanal
The hand that lets go is empty, and it fills; the hand that holds on is full, and it burns, its fullness a live coal.
1276. Going beyond what happened
porukkadh therindavar povaar poraadhavarnirpaar nikazhndadhil nindru
Those who know how to bear go on; those who do not bear stay standing in what happened.
1277. Release left unfinished
mutrum avinda neruppaarum paadhiyavidhal aviyaa neruppu
A fire wholly put out goes cool; a fire half put out is a fire not put out.
1278. Holding on sickens
vidukkin manathe vilaiyaadum inpampidikkin manathe pini
Where one lets go, joy plays in the mind itself; where one holds on, in that same mind, sickness.
1279. What release changes
vidaadhavar kaikkul vidamaakum theengumviduthavar kaikkul marundu
In the hands of those who cling, harm turns to poison; in the hands of those who let go, to medicine.
1280. Keeping the enemy within
pakaivan marandaan maravaamal nenjulpakaivanaik kaappaan ivan
The enemy has forgotten. This man has not, and in his heart he keeps his enemy safe.
