Chapter 127அதிகாரம் 127 துரோகம் Betrayal
Broken faith by someone relied upon.
1261. Trusting the whole person
orukai thozhudhaan marukaiyaal kondraanirukaiyum nambiya noy
He worshipped with one hand and killed with the other: the sickness of trusting both hands.
1262. What else dies
udpakai kollum uyirmatto nadpendrasollaiyung kollum udan
Enmity from within kills a life. Is that all it kills? Together with the life, it kills the word ‘friendship’.
1263. Hurt without refuge
ooraar umizhndaal thudaippom uraveumizhndaal thudaikkum idam
If the townsfolk spit on us, we wipe it off among our kin; if our kin spit on us, the place where we wipe is the one that spat.
1264. Closeness undoes protection
velivaal vilakkum kavasamadhan poottaiulavaal avizhkkum uravu
Armour turns the outer sword aside; the inner sword, kinship, unfastens its clasp.
1265. Love used against us
aranazhippaan anpalithaan anpalithe kandaanaranazhiyum otrai idam
Bent on razing the fortress, he offered his love, and by that very offering found the one place where the fortress falls.
1266. Care turns harmful
verkkuneer thanda nilamver velippaduthinverkkodutha neere vidam
If the ground that gave the root its water lays that root bare, the very water it gave is poison.
1267. Turning against support
kombir padarnda kodikombaik kolvadhornambiya sutrathin noy
A creeper climbs a branch and kills the branch it climbs: one sickness of trusted kin.
1268. Betraying ourselves
thannai vilaipesidh thaanvitraan thanvilaiyaidhthannidame kedpaan thavithu
He set a price on himself and sold himself; now, in anguish, he asks himself alone what his price was.
He was bargainer, seller and goods at once; the one asking is also the only one he asks.
1269. The past changes
kaippidithaan kaivittaal kaippiditha naalellaamkaivitta naalin kanakku
If a man who took someone’s hand lets it go, all the days he held it are entered in the account of the day he let it go.
1270. Doubt spreads further
ootrukkul nanjittaar kandapin maarineeretrumun naakkil ayirppu
After seeing who poisoned the spring, the tongue doubts even rainwater before it drinks.
