Chapter 115அதிகாரம் 115 உடனிருப்பு Presence

Being wholly here, with someone.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 1141.

    Being truly there

vandaa renalve rirundaa renalveruvandirundaa renpa tharidhu

To say someone came is one thing, and to say they were there is another; to be able to say they came and were there is rare.

  2. 1142.

    Close but apart

udalnerungi nenjam nerungaa thiruppinkadalnerungi vaazhum karai

Bodies drawn near while hearts stay apart: the shore that lives beside the sea.

  3. 1143.

    Presence is enough

kandrumon thaalsurakkum paalpol avarmunnenindradhe podhum manam

As milk flows when a calf merely nuzzles, so just to stand before that person is enough for the heart.

  4. 1144.

    Comfort in holding

anaithavan kainekizhndaal aaraakum kanneeranaithirundaal aarum thuyar

If his embracing hand slackens, tears become a river; if he keeps holding on, grief subsides.

  5. 1145.

    Wholly beside someone

kattilin pakkam vizhithaal iravellaammooschennum thaayin sevi

She stayed awake beside the bed all night, a mother’s ear counting the breaths.

  6. 1146.

    Becoming the remedy

marundalikkum kaiyavalthan maindannoy theerkkummarundavale yaavaal marandu

The mother whose hand gives medicine becomes, all unmindful, the very medicine that cures her son’s illness.

  7. 1147.

    Presence as a gift

pandamilai yendrukai patruvaar patriyakaiye perungodai yaam

Saying “I have nothing to give,” they take a hand, and that clasp itself is the great gift.

  8. 1148.

    Putting someone off

kanmunne nirpavarai naalaikken rennuvaalpunmer pudhaitha manal

The one standing before her she puts off till tomorrow: sand heaped over a wound.

  9. 1149.

    Living here now

verukku netraik kaliman ninaivillaineerul nuzhaivadhe ver

The root has no memory of yesterday’s clay; a root is its reaching into water.

A root grows only at its tip, always pressing into fresh, moist ground.

  10. 1150.

    Touch over counsel

akalirundu sollum arumarundin nandreudanirundu vaikkum viral

Better than a rare remedy spoken from afar is the finger laid by one who stays close.
