Chosen aloneness.
1091. Having a choice
தாழ்கொளுவும் கைக்குத் திறப்புண்டு தாழ்கொளுவப்பட்டகைக்குத் தாழே சுவர்

The hand that sets the latch can open it; to the hand shut in by that latch, the latch itself is a wall.

Those who stood among others saw the shade of others; those who remained alone saw themselves.
1093. Talk loses the self
பேசுவார் பேச்சில் தனைத்தொலைப்பான் முற்றிலும்பேச்சற்ற போழ்திலாவான் தான்
pesuvaar peschil thanaitholaippaan mutrilumpeschatra pozhthilaavaan thaan
In others’ talk he loses himself completely; when talk falls silent, he becomes himself.

Your own voice is yours alone to hear; to hear it, first you need four walls.
The voice is your actual speaking voice, heard with no one else listening.
1095. Learning to be alone

irukkak kalangum iruppe thanimaiirukkap pazhakin isai
Solitude is a staying that muddies the mind; to one grown used to staying, it is music.

koottam kalaindapin koodum ninaivondrukoottathul koodaa kanaa
When a gathering breaks up, a single memory gathers; within a gathering, a dream does not gather.
“Gather” here also means come together, take shape; in Tamil the word for the crowd comes from the same root as that verb.
1098. Bound by choice

1099. Leaving or rejection
வேண்டிப் பிரிந்தவன் கண்ணில் நிலவெல்லாம்வீசப் படுவான்கண் தீ
vendip pirindavan kannil nilavellaamveesap paduvaankan thee
In the eyes of one who chose to part, all is moonlight; in the eyes of one cast off, fire.
1100. Solitude becomes speech
தனிமையிற் சொல்வடியும் சொல்வடிந்தால் மீண்டுதனிமையே சொல்லாய் வரும்
thanimaiyir solvadiyum solvadindaal meenduthanimaiye sollaai varum
In solitude the words seep out; once the words have seeped out, solitude itself comes back as words.
