Chapter 109அதிகாரம் 109 தனிமைத்துயர் Loneliness
Unwanted aloneness.
1081. Hungry for friendship
pasithaal verumannum soraam thanimaipasithaal verunjollum nadpu
When one is hungry, even bare earth is rice; when loneliness is hungry, even a bare word is friendship.
1082. Close yet apart
mooschuk kalakkum alavuneruk kaayirundumpeschuk kalavaa idai
Two people close enough for their breath to mingle; between them, a space where no words mingle.
1083. Living unseen
kandirundum kaanaa thavarnaduve vaazhvadhudhaanundirundum patta pasi
To live among those who have seen yet do not see is to have eaten yet go hungry.
1084. Nobody says your name
solvaar solakkedkum sorvandru thanpeyaraissolvaa rilaadha thuyar
Growing tired of hearing people speak is not the sorrow; the sorrow is that no one speaks your name.
1085. Aloneness becomes confinement
iruvar olikkum araiye araiyaamoruvar olikkum sirai
Only a room that rings with two is a room; a room that rings with one is a prison.
1086. Kindness unreturned
vilakkinaan oorellaam veezhndaan irulilvilakkeduppaar yaarumil lai
The one who brought light to the whole town has fallen in darkness, and no one comes to him with a light.
1087. A household shrinks
orukudam neermukakkum osaiyul veeduarukirundaar inmai unarvu
In a house where only one pot of water is drawn, the sound of the drawing tells of those who once were near and now are gone.
Water is drawn by the potful for the day’s needs. One pot is one person’s share, where once there were several.
1088. Nobody asks
ethanai perirundum ennendru kelaarelathanai perum suvar
However many people are there, if none of them asks ‘What is it?’, that many people are a wall.
1089. Isolation wears us down
thiravaak kadhavin thuruverum patrumthiravaadh thanimai thuru
On a door that is never opened, rust climbs and takes hold; a solitude never opened turns to rust.
1090. Apart but still reached
vevveru moolai yodunginum ondredheekkavvum iruvar kulir
Though the two shrink into separate corners, one fire takes hold of the cold of both.
Shrinking into a corner is drawing in, from the cold or from each other. A house kept one hearth fire for all within it.
