Chapter 108அதிகாரம் 108 சாட்சி Witness
Seeing and testifying.
1071. Seeing outweighs hearsay
kanden enumsol karungallaam nootruvarkettom enumsol manal
The word of one who says “I saw” is black stone; the word of a hundred who say “we heard” is sand.
1072. Can rage be trusted?
sinamutraar solvadhanais saandrendru kollelsinamutraar saandrum sinam
Do not take the word of the angry as testimony; the testimony of the angry is anger.
1073. Traces bear witness
vatriya pinnum vazhindavidam kaattumkalutrariyum neerin urai
Even after the water has dried, the stone shows where it flowed; that mark, known by touch, is the water’s testimony.
1074. Both choices hurt
sonnaal neriyunj sumaiyundu sollaamalnindraal neriyum uyir
Speak, and a burden crushes you; do not speak, and your life is crushed.
1075. The burden of seeing
kondravan thoongum kolaikandaar kanniravumnindru nadungum nilai
The killer sleeps; the eyes of those who saw the killing keep trembling in the night. That is how things stand.
1076. Silence hides intensity
kandum uraiyaadhaan kallandru kallukkulkonda neruppuk kuri
Whoever has seen and does not speak is not a stone; they are the sign of the fire hidden within the stone.
1077. Experience over testimony
kandaan oruvan karisolinum meyyaamoundaar arivar unavu
Though one man who saw it bears witness, does that make it true? Those who ate know the food.
In Tamil the two lines turn on matching verbs: one man ‘saw’, others ‘ate’. These are two ways of having been there.
1078. Testimony survives violence
kandaanaik kondraalum kalvan azhippadhevankandadhenum orsol kari
Even if the thief kills the one who saw, what does he destroy? A single word, ‘seen’, stands witness.
The one who saw can be killed; the fact that the deed was seen cannot be unmade.
1079. Overlooked recovery
vizhundadhaik kandaar vizhundadhai mattumezhundadhai yaarennu vaar
Those who saw the fall saw only the fall; who will count the rising?
1080. Seeing changes perception
pattukkul noorpuzhu paarthaval pattaadaithottaalum thondrum puzhu
Once a woman has seen the worm inside the silk, the worm appears even when she touches a silk garment.
Silk thread is unwound from the cocoon a silkworm spins around itself, usually with the worm still inside.
