The power to punish, and the choice to spare.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 921.

    Knowing the wrong

theedhen rariyaa thizhaithaark kirakkamundutheedhen rarindaarkkudh theerppu

For those who did wrong not knowing it was wrong, mercy; for those who did wrong knowing it was wrong, judgment.

  2. 922.

    Mercy ends wrongdoing

kutram muzhudharindum sengol karangondummutrarule verarukkum vaal

Even with the fault known in full and the sceptre in hand, the only sword that cuts the wrong at its root is complete mercy.

  3. 923.

    Shame moves mercy

kutranjei thonnaanil kotravankai vaalthalarummatradhuve maandar arul

If the wrongdoer feels shame, the sword goes slack in the king’s hand; that slackening alone is human mercy.

  4. 924.

    Power to spare

vaalkondaan vaikkum arule arulaakumvaalilaan vaivadhu vaai

Only the mercy of a man who holds a sword is mercy; the railing of a man without one is all mouth.

Sparing takes the power to strike. A man with no sword has nothing to withhold; he can only rail, and his railing has no force.

  5. 925.

    A chance to grow

varutha vidhaiyin vazhimulai yillaiporutha vidhaimattum poo

A scorched seed never sends up a shoot; only the seed that was spared and held on comes to flower.

  6. 926.

    What killing hides

kondraal theriyum edaimattum kollaadhuvittaal theriyum uyir

Kill it, and all you will know of it is its weight; spare it, and you will know its life.

  7. 927.

    What mercy leaves

kondriruppin theerndiruppaan kollaa tharulseythaannindrirukkum nenjil neruppu

Had he killed him, the man would have been finished. He did not kill him; he showed him mercy, and a fire stays standing in the heart.

Death would have closed the matter; sparing leaves it open. Fire in the heart means anguish or anger, and the heart could be either man’s.

  8. 928.

    Another way forward

velerindaan kaiyir kalappai koduthavalnaalarivaar potrum nalam

The woman who put a plough into the hand that threw a spear: that is the grace the wise praise.

  9. 929.

    Kindness feeds harm

neruppinir peynei niruthumo theeyaiarudkodai theeyork kazhal

Will ghee poured into a fire put it out? A gift of mercy to the wicked is fire.

  10. 930.

    When to spare

kolarindaan komaan kurainiruthaan kolthanikkumkaalarindaan mannan avan

One who knows the rod is a lord; one who weighs the fault and knows when to lower the rod is the king.
