Chapter 92அதிகாரம் 92 நீதி Justice

Righting wrongs.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 911.

    Justice too late

thunputraar thaangidh tholaindapin vandadheerppuenpukku vaithamarun thaam

After those who suffered have borne it and are gone, the verdict comes: medicine laid on bone.

  2. 912.

    Help that enables harm

vettiyapin kodarikkuk kaambalitha meedhimaramvettukkudh theerppaa kumo

After the cutting, what was left of the tree gave the axe its handle. Can that be justice for the cut?

Axe handles are carved from wood; here what is left of the injured goes to equip what injured it.

  3. 913.

    When correction destroys

vannaan kasakkum alave thunidhooymaiennaa thudhaithaal izhai

Cloth comes clean only so far as the washerman’s wringing goes; kicked without thought, it is down to thread.

Village washermen wring, beat and even trample cloth on the washing stone.

  4. 914.

    Naming the harmed

nondaar peyarsollaadh theerppenna theervaamothottaar sudaadha neruppu

What is a verdict that never names those who suffered? Will it settle anything, this fire that does not burn to the touch?

Burning is what makes fire fire; without it, fire has lost the one thing it is for.

  5. 915.

    Verdicts without protection

theerppe koduppaar thavaraidh thadukkaakkaaltheerppe kodumaik kidam

If those who give verdicts do not prevent the wrong, the verdict itself becomes cruelty’s ground.

  6. 916.

    Hearing both sides

irudhiramum kelaan iyambuvaan theerppuorukaiyaal neenduvaan oppu

One who pronounces a verdict without hearing both sides is like someone swimming with one hand.

  7. 917.

    Bias behind judgment

seerthookki nindraal thulaiyendi endukaiyinnokke sarithadhu thattu

She stood weighing, holding the scales up, and nothing tipped the pan but the eye she held them with.

  8. 918.

    Distance from pain

aduppoodhi vendavalkan neerarivaal pakkamnaduvuraippaar naavalavir sol

The woman scorched blowing on the hearth knows the tears; those who stand to one side and speak of fairness speak no deeper than the tongue.

  9. 919.

    Restoration over revenge

nanjootti naanukku nanjootta lortheerppaananjundaan nalluyire theerppu

Is it a remedy to poison the poisoner? The only remedy is the good life of the one who swallowed the poison.

  10. 920.

    Repair that falls short

veraruthup poovalithaar poovukkul verillaiyaararivaar verin vali

They cut it at the root and gave the flower; there is no root in the flower. Who knows the root’s strength, or its pain?
