Chapter 87அதிகாரம் 87 முரண்பாடு Conflict

Strife between people.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 861.

    Where conflict begins

kallirandu pakkathe nindraalum theeyillaiondrondraidh theendale thee

Two stones standing side by side make no fire; the touch of one upon the other is the fire.

  2. 862.

    When calming backfires

kodhithaar sevikkul amaidhi pukuthalkodhineyyul neervidu maaru

Putting calm words into the ears of people boiling with anger is like letting water into boiling ghee.

Ghee is clarified butter, heated very hot for frying in Indian kitchens; every cook keeps water well away from it.

  3. 863.

    Both sides pay

modhiya kallil neruppun dirukallumtheyndadhai yaarari vaar

When stone clashes with stone there is fire; who notices that both stones are worn down?

  4. 864.

    Stopped by shared trouble

maarupad dodum irudherk kudhiraiyumserupad daalnirkum serndu

Even the horses of two chariots, pulling against each other, stop and stand together when mired in mud.

  5. 865.

    Witnesses carry wounds

porseythaar punpetraar paarthirundaar nenjakathupperkkariya punper ravar

Those who fought took wounds; those who watched took wounds in the heart, hard to dislodge.

  6. 866.

    Disagreement can yield good

kadaindidum vennei kalakkathul thondrumkadaiyaa thirundaal kadai

Butter rises from the milk’s turmoil as it is churned; left unchurned, it comes to nothing.

The verse’s last word, kadai, also means “the lowest”, and “churn!”, so it can close on a command.

  7. 867.

    What sealing breeds

moodiya punnul salamoodis seezhperukummoodiya sollul sinam

In a wound sealed over by its own fluid, pus swells; in words sealed over, anger.

The Tamil word for the wound’s fluid, salam, also means anger and stubbornness.

  8. 868.

    Who yields first

neesollen renindraan neeyenavum nindraalorvaasaliru pakkam maraindu

He stood and said, “You speak.” She stood and said, “You.” On either side of one doorway, they stayed hidden.

Each keeps to the wall beside the same door, out of the other’s sight, one step apart.

  9. 869.

    Words divide communities

verodi mellak karungal udaindadhupolseerodum oorpilakkum sol

As granite cracks when a root slowly runs through it, a word splits a town, its good name and order with it.

  10. 870.

    Provocation feeds harm

saambalaidh theeyittaal saambaleyaam theeyaraidhtheeyittaal theeye mikum

Set fire to ash and it stays ash; set fire to the wicked and fire itself grows.
