Chapter 88அதிகாரம் 88 கேடு Harm

Injury done to others.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 871.

    Silence shares the harm

sollaa thiruthal seyalo sudarkandumsollaan suduvaan thunai

Is it right to say nothing? Whoever has seen the flame and still does not speak is partner to the one doing the burning.

  2. 872.

    Remaining blind to harm

kaanaa thavanseyyum theemai siridhaakumkaanaa thirundaan kolai

Harm done by one who does not see weighs little; to go on not seeing is killing.

One misses the harm while acting; the other remains unseeing. The Tamil leaves open whether that killing is his deed or his end.

  3. 873.

    What follows an act

veesiyavar kallai marappaar vizhundakalaazha ilangum valai

Those who throw a stone forget it; the stone they threw has sunk deep, and its rings gleam on the water.

  4. 874.

    Correction can cause harm

kolizhuthaan neraaka vaikkavendraan kolizhukkumkaiye valaithadhu kol

He pulled at the rod, saying he would straighten it; the hand that pulled the rod is the hand that bent it.

  5. 875.

    Repair leaves a trace

udaithapin ottum enalkenmin ottumudainda idangaattum kodu

‘Once broken, it will join,’ they say. Listen: it joins, and a line shows where it broke.

  6. 876.

    Only her own pain

adithaval kainokum annove kedpaaladipattaar novariyaal kaan

See: the woman who struck asks after the pain in her own hand, and does not know the pain of those she struck.

  7. 877.

    The pain lands elsewhere

ambeytha villuk kalaippillai ambudhaindameykkudh theriyum vali

The bow that loosed the arrow feels no weariness; the body the arrow sank into knows the pain.

  8. 878.

    Remedy cannot erase harm

marundid dadhanaal maraiyaa marathilirunditta kodari vaai

The axe’s bite in the tree does not vanish for all the medicine laid on it.

  9. 879.

    Causing without knowing

erindavan kaiyo eripatta kalloarindiladhu thaanpatta pun

The throwing hand and the thrown stone alike: neither knew the wound it made.

  10. 880.

    Missing our own impact

kaalpadhinda setrunilam kaalpadhinda thendrariyumkaalpadhindaar kaanaar adi

Mud knows when a foot has sunk into it; those whose foot sank do not see the footprint.
