Even-handedness.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 841.

    Fairness under pressure

nelvaithaar saayungol kalvaithaar saayungolsolvaithaar saayaa nadu

Set grain on the scale and the beam tips; set a stone on it and the beam tips; set a word on it and the even-handed middle does not tip.

In Tamil, nadu, ‘the middle’, is both the beam’s centre and fairness itself, which holds firm against pressure to favour one side.

  2. 842.

    Same burden, unequal strain

orunukathin keezhiruvar poottin valiyaannadappaan eliyaan vizhum

When two are set under one yoke, the strong one walks on and the weak one falls.

  3. 843.

    Excusing our own

pirarpaanai pongir pukaiyenpar thambaanaipongir samaiyal enal

When other people’s pot boils over, they call it smoke; when their own pot boils over, they call it cooking.

  4. 844.

    Wealth skews judgment

porulutraar poymmai poruppaa rulakamporulatraar meymmaiyum poy

The world bears the lies of those who have wealth; from those who lack it, even the truth is counted a lie.

  5. 845.

    Rules for others

muraiyendraar munvarisai mutrum amarndapinpinvarisaik keyul murai

Once every seat in the front row is taken, they call for order, and order is for the back row alone.

  6. 846.

    One standard for both

orunel poraiyum orukal poraiyumtherivadhon renirai kol

One grain of paddy, one stone weight: the same balance tells the weight of each.

  7. 847.

    Standards worn away

alavukol aayiramber andraadam theettinkalavuko laakum kadai

If a thousand people whittle at a measuring rod every day, in the end the rod of measure is a rod of theft.

  8. 848.

    Who gets praised

nootraval kaivida noolvirippaan matravanporthavan meyyil pukazh

A woman spun the thread and let it go from her hand; another man spread it out; the praise rests on the body of the man who wore it.

  9. 849.

    Fair in name

valiyaar vakuthadhanai nerenpar mellaarmelivadhan pero nadu

What the strong have settled, the weak call fair; is justice the name for the weak wearing thin?

  10. 850.

    Bias becomes the rule

saayndapadi natta mudharkaal muraiseyyumvaayndadhellaam saayum padi

The first post, planted leaning, administers its justice: all that comes to it leans.
