831. Example shapes others
கோல்நேராய் நின்றால் நிழல்நேராம் கோல்கோணின்நாளெல்லாம் கோடும் நிழல்
kolneraai nindraal nizhalneraam kolkoninnaalellaam kodum nizhal
If the staff stands straight, its shadow lies straight; if the staff bends, its shadow is crooked all day long.
832. One move guides many
நின்றவள் சாய்ந்தாள் நெடுமந்தை நூற்றினுக்கும்சென்றது சாய்ந்த திசை
nindraval saayndaal nedumandai nootrinukkumsendradhu saaynda thisai
She had been standing; she leaned, and the long herd, a hundred strong, went the way she leaned.
She is the one at the head of the herd.
833. Experience shows the way
வழிகேட்டார் பேசுவார் வானளவு சென்றார்மொழியாமல் காட்டும் அடி
vazhikettaar pesuvaar vaanalavu sendraarmozhiyaamal kaattum adi
Those who asked the way do the talking; those who walked it as far as the sky leave footprints that show it without a word.
834. Opening the way
நூல்கோத்த ஊசி நுழைந்துவிட்டால் பின்வரும்நூலுக்கு வேண்டா வழி
noolkotha oosi nuzhainduvittaal pinvarumnoolukku vendaa vazhi
When a needle carrying thread has gone through, the thread that follows needs no path of its own.
835. Seeking honest counsel
கண்ணாடி காட்டும் வடுவைப் பொறுப்பானேகண்ணாடி தேடும் தலை
kannaadi kaattum vaduvaip poruppaanekannaadi thedum thalai
Only the head that can bear the scar a mirror shows seeks a mirror.
836. Others depend on her
நீரில் நடத்தும் புணையவள் நீர்கொள்ளின்நீரில் முழுகும் பிறர்
neeril nadathum punaiyaval neerkollinneeril muzhukum pirar
She is the raft that carries others on the water; if she takes in water, they sink in that water.
837. A vision shared
கண்டார் ஒருவர் கனவாம் பலர்கண்டால்உண்டாம் விடியும் பொழுது
kandaar oruvar kanavaam palarkandaalundaam vidiyum pozhudhu
What one person sees is a dream; when many see it, it is dawn.
838. Support can be withdrawn
மக்கள்கை யேந்தும் அரசுமக்கள் கைவிடின்மிக்கானும் மண்ணோடு மண்
makkalkai yendum arasumakkal kaividinmikkaanum mannodu man
A ruler stands above the people’s raised hands; when the people let their hands drop, even the mightiest is earth among earth.
839. Following before the call
ஆயன் குழலுக்கு முன்னமே ஆநிரைபோயிருக்கும் நெஞ்சம் தொடர்ந்து
aayan kuzhalukku munname aaniraipoyirukkum nenjam thodarndu
Even before the herdsman’s flute, the herd will have set out, following his heart.
A herdsman’s flute calls the cattle out to pasture. In Tamil the heart (nenjam) is the seat of both feeling and intent.
840. Drawn towards shared purpose
ஊசியின் வேட்கை யுணர்ந்த துகளெலாம்பேசா தொருதிசை நோக்கு
oosiyin vedkai yunarnda thukalelaampesaa thorudhisai nokku
All the specks that have felt the magnetised needle’s longing gaze one way, without a word.
Iron filings near a magnetised needle feel its pull and settle into lines, all pointing the same way.
