Chapter 74அதிகாரம் 74 விருந்தோம்பல் Welcome

Receiving the guest and the stranger.

Read one verse at a timeஒரு நேரத்தில் ஒரு குறள்

  1. 731.

    Welcome makes a home

virundom palilaa vidudhi vidudhivirundom palulladhe veedu

Without the welcoming of guests, a house is a lodging, a mere lodging; with it, a house is a home.

  2. 732.

    Welcome takes effort

thondaak kinaru kinarandru vandaarkkudhthondum maname kinaru

An undug well is not a well; the mind that digs for those who come is the only well.

A well exists only through digging. Here the mind does the digging for each one who comes, and is hollowed into the well itself.

  3. 733.

    More than room

vandaar irukka idamilaa illamandruvandaa rilaadha vidam

A home does not lack because it has no room for guests; the empty home is the one no guest comes to.

  4. 734.

    Guests read us

thiranda kadhavin akalamandru vandaararindadhun nenjin alavu

Those who came to you took the measure not of how wide your door stood open, but of how wide your heart is.

  5. 735.

    Making room anyway

kudamnakarthik koodathil oridam seythalidamillaa eekaiyin per

To push the water-pot aside and clear a place in the hall: that is the name for giving when there is no room to give.

  6. 736.

    Rejection without words

vaaven ruraiyaar vazhimozhiyaar aayinumpoven ruraikkum puram

They do not say ‘come’; they speak no word at all; and still their back says ‘go’.

  7. 737.

    Aversion kills welcome

varavukandu nenjam surunguvaar munnamvirundu kolaiyunda thaam

Before those whose hearts shrink at the sight of someone coming, the guest’s welcome lies slain.

  8. 738.

    Wholehearted welcome matters

purangoduthaar vaayilil poovirundum vaadumakangoduthaar kallum malar

At the door of those who turn their back, a flower wilts though it is there; at the door of those who give their heart, even stone blooms.

  9. 739.

    Fulfilment in hosting

unnaa thurangaa thuzhandrupadudh thaanvirundaiundaan uranginaan pol

Unfed and unslept, he toiled until his guest was laid down to sleep, and was like a man who had eaten and slept.

  10. 740.

    Warmth that lasts

vendadhum aarum virundombal nenjullethandadhum aaraa thazhal

Even what is cooked will cool; what welcome gives within the heart is a flame that does not cool.
